35-40 cm

  • Saffron yellow body
  • Darker olive back and tail
  • Greenish bill with red lower mandible
  • Red rump and ocular skin
  • Yellow iris

Distribution

South America: found in humid forests of south-eastern Brazil locally also in north-eastern Argentina and eastern Paraguay.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Included in the genus Baillonius by some authorities.

Habitat

Denizen of the mid-level Atlantic forest.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet consists mostly of fruit, supplemented by insects during the breeding season.

Breeding

The 3-4 pure white, elliptical shaped eggs are incubated for 16 days. The young fledge at 40-42 days.
