Porzana albicollis

Identification

  • Brownish back with black and olive-brown streaks
  • Slate-grey underparts
  • Pale grey throat
  • Black tail
  • Lower flanks and under tail coverts barred black and white
  • Short bill

Sexes are alike.

Distribution

This species is found in South America from Colombia to Argentina east of the Andes.

Taxonomy

Placed in genus Mustelirallus by Clements.

Habitat

Swamps and areas of seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland.

Behaviour

Breeding

Between 2 and 5 eggs are laid in a nest which is a large open bowl made out of dry grass, placed on the ground or just above and hidden between tree roots or by the grass.

Diet

The diet includes insects and insect larvae and grass seeds.
