Identification
63-69 cm. A large guan.
- Mainly rich brown plumage, flecked white or silvery white over head, breast and upper back
- Red dewlap
- Bright pinkish-red bare facial skin
Distribution
Southern Bolivia and northwestern Argentina.
Fairly common to common in its small range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Found in cloud forest on steep slopes of the eastern Andes.
Occurs mainly between 1800 m and 2500 m, sometimes as low as 1300 or as high as 3000 m.
In same habitat as Yungas Guan in northwestern Argentina and both species may be seen foraging together.
Behaviour
Diet
No information on diet.
Forages in trees or on the ground, usually in pairs or in groups of up to 25 birds.
Breeding
Display and calling pairs recorded in October to December in Argentina, September to October in Bolivia. The nest is a platform made of twigs and stems. It's placed in a tree. Lays 3 eggs.
Movements
Presumably largely sedentary, some downslope movements recorded.
