Identification

  • Black upperparts with metallic blue sheen to head, hind neck, lower back, rump and uppertail-coverts
  • White underparts
  • Short head crest
  • White wing patches
  • Bare red skin beneath eye
  • Pink feet
  • Large orange caruncles

Distribution

Chatham Islands, New Zealand.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].
Sometimes placed in genus Phalacrocorax.

Habitat

Shores, rocky headlands, cliffs and islands.

Behaviour

Breeding

It nests in colonies. The eggs are chalky blue.

Diet

The diet includes small fish.
