Euschistospiza dybowskii

Identification

11-11.5cm

  • Mainly grey
  • Red upper back
  • Black flanks with white spots arranged in pairs
  • Eye-ring pale grey-blue but can be pink or red
  • Male - black underparts
  • Female - grey underparts

Distribution

Across Africa just south of Sahara, discontinuously distributed from southeastern Senegal to Guinea, east to northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, southern South Sudan, and northwestern Uganda

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Open grassy woodland and grassy rock outcrops.

Behaviour

Breeding

The male builds a domed shaped nest in shrubs from grass, lined with grass and feathers. The 4-6 white eggs are incubated by both sexes during the day, the female only at night, for 13-14 days. The young fledge 21 days later.

Diet

The diet includes seeds, insects and fruit.
