Distribution
South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.

Five subspecies are recognized1:
- M. m. ruficoronatus:
- M. m. griseonuchus:
- Western Andes of north-western Peru (Piura and Cajamarca)
- M. m. malaris:
- Central Andes of northern Peru (north of Chachapoyas in Amazonas)
- M. m. melanocephalus:
- Eastern Andes of Peru (Amazonas to Ayacucho)
- M. m. bolivianus:
- Andes of southern Peru (Cuzco) to western Bolivia (La Paz and Cochabamba)
Habitat
Humid montane forests, elfin and cloud forests, forest edges and nearby scrub. Observed at heights around 2,300 m.
Behaviour

Food is mostly invertebrates, insects and other invertebrates. They prefer to forage in the high canopy, but do feed at all levels, including the tops of bushes.
