16–19 cm (6-7 in)

  • Plumage mostly grey and white
  • Blackish hood
  • Long legs

Distribution

South America, Australasia, Antarctica
Circumpolar subantarctic waters, north to about 35°South
South America: Chile, Argentina, Falkland Islands
Australasia: Australia, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, New Zealand, Stewart Island,
Antarctica: South Georgia, Tristan da Cunha, Prince Edward Island

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Subantarctic waters, near the continental shelf.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists mostly of immature barnacles and other crustaceans.
