Identification

22cm. Green, dark red belly, rump and tail-tip (tail all dark red from below), grey-scaled chest, grey legs and a white eyering.

Distribution

Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Brazil.

Taxonomy

Four subspecies recognized:

  • P. r. peruviana - sometimes accepted as full species, Wavy-breasted Parakeet (including dilutissima).
  • Foothills of the Andes in southeastern Ecuador (Morona-Santiago) and northern Peru (Amazonas and western Loreto)
  • P. r. dilutissima
  • Apurímac Valley, south central Peru
  • P. r. parvifrons in northern Mato Grosso, Brazil
  • wo disjunct regions in northern Peru: in eastern San Martín and adjacent west central Loreto, and along the Amazon in northeastern Loreto
  • P. r. roseifrons in northern Mato Grosso, Brazil
  • Estern Amazonia, south of the Amazon, from northern Peru south to northern Bolivia (La Paz) and in western Brazil (western Amazonas)

Sometimes treated as a subspecies of Painted Parakeet.

Habitat

Humid lowland forest.

Behaviour

Its diet includes fruits, seeds and flowers.

The nest is placed in a tree cavity.
