44-46cm.
- Black plumage
- Glossed purple upperparts
- Spiny feathers on foreparts

Sexes similar. Juveniles are washed rufous and unbarred.
Similar species
Bill straighter than in Greater Black Coucal.
Distribution
Endemic to Biak Island, (Geelvink Bay off northern New Guinea) Indonesia.
