- Pionus menstruus
Identification
27cm. Green, blue head and neck, red under tail feathers, yellow wing coverts, black upper mandible with reddish sides, dark ear patches. Sexes alike. Juvenile - less blue on head, red or pink feathers around ceres.
Distribution
Costa Rica, Venezuela, Trinidad south to Bolivia and Brazil.
Taxonomy
There are 4 subspecies.
Habitat
Forest, semi-open country, cultivated areas.
Behaviour
The diet includes fruit, seed and grain.
It nests in a tree cavity and 3-5 white eggs are laid.
