Identification
Mottled brown duck with white and green flashes on its wings. Sexes similar.
Distribution
Taxonomy
Two subspecies accepted:
- A. g. gibberifrons from Java and Sulawesi east to the Lesser Sundas (Timor and Wetar) in Indonesia
- A. g. remissa found on Rennell (Solomon Islands), extinct since 1959
Andaman Teal was also treated as a subspecies of this species but is now widely regarded as full species.
Habitat
Open wetlands, freshwater lakes and marshes.
Behaviour
It nests on the ground, in tree holes or rabbit burrows.
