Kyrgyzstan, southern Siberia, China and Mongolia. Introduced population in Italy.
Taxonomy
There are 2 subspecies.
Habitat
Farmland, open countryside with some shrubs.
Behaviour
Terrestrial.
It nests in a lined depression and 18-20 eggs are laid.
The diet includes seeds, though the young take insects.
Vocalisation
Song: harsh kieerr-ik.
