Identification
10-12 cm. Greenish-brown upperparts, off-white underparts, yellowy flanks, short white supercilium, dark bill and legs.
Distribution
Europe and Asia, wintering in s and w Europe, s Asia and n Africa.
Taxonomy
Six subspecies are recognized:
- P. c. abietinus
- P. c. collybita
- P. c. brevirostris
- P. c. caucasicus
- P. c. menzbieri
- P. c. tristis
Tristis is sometimes accepted as full species, called Siberian Chiffchaff.
The Canary Islands Chiffchaff and the Iberian Chiffchaff have been considered conspecific with this species.
Habitat
Open woodlands
Behaviour
The female builds a domed nest with a side entrance, made from dead leaves and grass. 2-7 cream, ruddy, purple or blackish spotted eggs are laid and incubated by the female for 13–14 days; the female cares for the young for 14–15 days until they fledge.
The diet includes insects.
