Identification

13cm. Male - black, bright blue back, pale orange legs, red crown. Female - olive-green upperparts, paler olive underparts.

Distribution

Southern Colombia, eastern Venezuela, the Guyanas, Brazil and Tobago

Taxonomy

It has been split into 2 species:

  • Chiroxiphia pareola
  • Chiroxiphia boliviana

Habitat

Forests.

Behaviour

The female builds a twig nest; 2 brown-mottled white eggs are laid, and incubated by the female for 20 days.

The diet includes fruit and insects.
