Identification
25cm
- Black above
- Yellow buff underparts with black streaks
- Red vent
- Large white scapular patches
- White barred flight feathers and tail sides
- Yellow sides to the neck
- White cheeks
- Long black moustachial stripe
- Male has red nape patch
- Long bill
Distribution
Asia: found in the Himalayas of Nepal to Szechwan and northern Myanmar, Bhutan, south-western China, north-eastern India, and north-western Vietnam.

Subspecies
Clements recognizes these subspecies[1]:
- D. d. darjellensis: Nepal to southeast Tibet, northeast India, northern Myanmar and northwest Tonkin
Dendrocopos darjellensis desmursi southwest China
Habitat
Sub-tropical forests.
