Yorkshire Birding (3 Viewers)

Hi All,

First post on here. As a complete novice in these things, can anyone advise on somewhere within striking distance of York where we might see a Kingfisher?

Hoping to take my mother out in the car at the weekend, and she's always wanted to see one.

Thanks for any advice,
Geoff

It may be better to wait until after the post breeding dispersal. The last I heard there were no reliable Kingfishers at Tophill, or any other local East Yorkshire site. I'm afraid 2 consecutive bad winters have taken their toll :-C

You could always try Fairburn Ings, they reckon the kingfisher screen is giving good views this year.

Hi

Thanks to Bob, Ken and Pete for the tips of where to visit on my hol's.

Will have to give the Raptor watch point a go as Honey Buzzard would be a lifer.

Cheers

Tim.

stunning views today, in front of and above the watch point. Even when on the other side of the valley they drifted across towards us. Almost constantly in view from 9:30 - 12 :00 while I was there. At least four birds but could have been more and also a couple of C.Buzzards.

Received a tip about some young owls yesterday,on edge of my patch.Took a stroll up and ended up having best evenings birding in memory! Nothing rare, just the views and abundance of birds like whitethroat/swift etc was astonishing!

Thanks for the tip-off doc, managed to connect with the adult tawny but couldn't find the babys. Did the river walk and was rewarded with tons of young warblers including loads of sedgies. Also heard tawnies further up the river too. Bumped into lawts trying to push the owls out of the tree with his huge lens. :)

We watched from the FC view point although you would have had them from HB.
Also Crossbills were on show, mostly flybys but also perched. Surprisingly not a single Accipiter.

Hi

I will be up in Yorkshire this weekend (some members might remember me from my time up there - 34 years of it) and I would like to know if I have any chance of seeing, or even hearing, Spotted Crake in the LDV. If so where? And any advice on timing?

Also, where is the best place for seeing Nightjars around York these days? It must be at least 24 years since I last went for them at Skipwith Common so I have no idea if the place is still suitable.

A pm would probably be better than a reply on here as I know sites are sensitive.

Cheers

Hatfield and Thorne Moors are probably the best bet for nightjars

Finally got to do Strid Wood last sunday. Me and mate had a cracking days birding. Walked fom Barden Bridge to Cavendish Pavillion and back up the other side. 51 species spotted including great views of kingfisher, dipper, cuckoo, common sandpiper, grey wagtail and my first sighting of a gooosander with young. Looked over the wall just before you enter the wood and my mate spotted a little owl on a distant wall. Saw quite a few pied flycatcher, including a male catching flys from rocks at the waters edge! Spotted flycatcher, thanks for info where to see it, at least 3 wood warbler including a singing male giving his all only yards from us, all his body shaking! A family of treecreepers huddled up on a tree trunk, never seen that before. My first nuthatch nest with hole plastered up to make the hole smaller. 2 possibly 3 tawny owl, heard them a few times, then we heard other birds going crackers! Saw 1 fly into tree but lost view of it then after a while 2 flew out and away. Found another tawny further on thanks to local blackbirds! 2 green woodpeckers, a few great spotted, sparrow hawk and buzzard. Only downside on a very enjoyable days birding was not being able to find redstart, but i'll definitley be going back. Cracking place. Thanks for info, really appreciated,

Paul

There are some Redstarts along the minor road from Barden Bridge, which runs above the woodland you walked through

Had a trip out of county with my miniture sidekick. We managed great views of the Robin despite her best attempts to flush it. I moved off quick smart and even managed a few shots of it despite being en loco parentis. Best bit was wandering back from the playground where I had been distracting mini me and stumbling on the bird - we always dip when we are together so it was nice when she clocked it as well and managed to ID it to order with a shout of 'birdie'.
