do nuthatch and tree creepers hang around all year or do they winter away?
In my experience, both will stick to an area if the habitat is suitable for breeding. However, Nuthatch is much less likely to move between isolated areas of woodland. This can make them a local rarity in areas that contain isolated woodland with no resident birds, probably due to the lack of suitable breeding habitat. On the other hand, the Treecreeper is more likely to move around in search of food - usually as part of mobile tit flocks.

Has any one got any shots of the hooded merg that has been seen in the county, stood on the bank with clear views of the legs.
Before individuals answer with no rings, this is not the reason for my asking.

Ringing was a washout this morning and we closed the nets after two rounds once the drizzle started with only a retrapped wren for our troubles. We then headed to Bempton where the RF Bluetail showed like a dream - a new bird for my friend who missed them on their breeding grounds years ago. I then went onto North Landing where I had several brief views of the Dusky Warbler, typical of the species. It was tacking away nicely at times also. The weather closed in and time constraints meant I had to head home. Would rather have gone to south shields - I guess the grin on Darren Wards face meant he connected!

Getting cynical with age John? Remember you were pretty regular at 'others' birds a while back. Didn't you make a living out of guiding birders to rare birds?
Hopefully get back to it myself when I get my life back together.

Doc, I thought we agreed not to mention the binoculars, luckily my blurry vision and classic rock damaged ears compensated for my lack of optics. Note to self, make sure you've got the bins ahead of sorting out the coffee. Can't complain too much as i got 2 lifers. Good day out despite the weather.

Mark.

Nice one Mark, reminds me of the day I went birding, took scope and forgot the tripod....how do you do that? I must have been brain dead that day. So I took my Kowa for a walk round the Washburn Valley as I wasn't leaving it in the car. Most annoying as there were a few birds across the other side of Fewston that I couldn't make out with the bins and hand holding a Kowa 823 is at best freaking difficult.

I'm sure weve all got stories about birding cockups, i'm not the first and i wont be the last, although this is now my third mishap counting missing the boat at brid and forgetting about the clock change for the black grouse meet. Can anyone see a pattern?

Mark.

Mark,
I said nothing of the days I've gone birding with nothing more than optics and a notebook, no money, food or drink and no bloody cards either so no chance to visit an ATM. Trekking across Ilkley Moor with rain running down the inside of my jacket because my waterproof was in the car boot and I'd got to Ilkley by bus and the idea was to bus home from Menston. Having to pay entrance fee to Blacktoft Sands as I left my wallet in my other trousers...RSPB membership card in the wallet.... I could write a blessed book about it. Don't feel down, just be grateful when you connect with crackin' birds like today!

Modern Birding Terms part two

Hi Eddie

not cynical just facetious and a little ironic- I am having a little dig at modern birding where anyone can find a rare bird and us old hands are struggling..

at Spurn last weekend two bluetails were pulled out from under the noses of some of the counties most ardent bird hunters who between them have spent several thousand bird days looking for a ..bluetail!

then in Durham someone innocently photographed a warbler they thought to be a yellow browed..it turned out to be a species that many keen birders have been dreaming of finding every since they thumbed through the copy of "Birds of Heligoland" on a wet October evening at The Warren

OMG I am beginning to sound like GPC! ;)

Modern Birding Terms part three

..sorry, I just had to look at a dictionary, what I should have said was that I was just feeling JEALOUS! o:)

get out birding soon and "stroke a bluetail today"

Red flanked Bluetail was showing well up at bempton first thing this morning, not been seen since just after 8am though when some person trying to get a better photo flushed it into the hedge by the feeding station :C, i hope it shows well soon for all the other crowd up there, Red Backed Shrike still on the fence at the old raf base too,, quite a few Siskin overhead and a few Goldcrest round the reserve

more Bluetailing

the Bluetail found its way back to the regular spot in the plantation by the feeding station mid-afternoon. Compared to last weeks Spurn bird this one has been "showy". I hope it hangs round for more stroking!
