Word for Birder in Spanish? (1 Viewer)

I speak in Spanish fairly often, though my native language is English. When I am talking about birds and birding in Spanish I have not found satisfactory words for the English words "birding" and "birder"

The words I have found for "birding" are: "observación de aves" and "buscando aves". These phrases get long to say several times during a conversation. Does anyone know of a single word that would be a good translation of "birding"?

For the word "birder" I have found: "observador de aves" and "pajarero". I am not sure that pajarero works with the same sense. Is there a good single word?

Birders in both Ecuador and Costa Rica are called "pajareros" with the verb "pajariar." I prefer "observador de aves" and tell people "voy a observar aves."

Although I can't lay claim to being a native speaker of Spanish!

In Spain we also say "pajareros" for birders and "pajarear" for birding. I am a bilingual birder and have created a pre-recorderd Spanish for Birders class ideal for people wanting to travel to Latin America to bird. Spanish for Birders

I can't help with the question, but I do recall getting mixed up between "pajaro" and "pajero" in conversation.

It was only later I realised that I might not have been saying "bird", but something that rhymed with "banker". Google translate will confirm.

Words related to birdwatching can be a landmine for non-native speakers in Spain... 'Pajareo' is birdwatching, 'pajarero' is a birdwatcher... all very similar to 'pajero' and easily misspoken (although deliberately misspeaking and calling your birdwatching friends wankers is equally common)

I realise that I have heard "pajarero" if I remember correctly in mainland Spain (near Malaga).
Also on the Canary Islands, where I asked a local birder to write it down for me (she had just shown me a site for Bustard)
That said, it hasn’t ever been of any use until this thread !!

Pajarero is the right word. Unfortunately in other context it also means bird trapper or bird trader, so we also use simply 'birder'.

Spanish in Spain is often quite different than Spanish in Latin America and especially in Costa Rica which has been very isolated for most of its existence. Not unlike the nouns used by the Brits as compared to the USA for the same object. In Costa Rica I would often come across words that did not appear in any Spanish dictionary in print or on my iphone.
