woodpecker upside down suet feeders (1 Viewer)

Got a question, I had a regular suet cake feeder and the squirrels were eating all the suet, so my neighbor made me a upside down suet feeder and so far the only woodpeckers to eat off of it are the downies. Did I scare off the red-bellied and the Northern Flickers? Will they ever come back? Is there something I can do to entice them back? I thought the new feeder would be the one they liked, that is what all the web sites said, now I have one and no woodpeckers. I am running out of patience!

You can switch to a Hot Pepper Suet. Haven't found a bird that doesn't like it and the squirrels hate it. I go through approx. 9 cakes a week.

Hi there and a warm welcome to you from the entire staff here at BirdForum ;)

Thanks for the warm welcome, I have two suet cakes left, should I just throw them away, or should I just put them away and get a single hot pepper suet cake to entice them back and then put that one out again? Thankfully I don't go through that many cakes, they last quite awhile, especially now that the squirrels don't even pay attention to the new feeder. I will try to post a pic of it here, and you can give me your advice.

A Chickadee ate off the new feeder this morning, I heard the woodpecker, did not see him but he was close, maybe since it snowed, the woodpeckers will find the suet feeder, I hope so. Thanks again for the warm welcome.

new feeder

If I put a small chunk of suet on top of the feeder, do you think that will attract the larger woodpeckers? The Chickadee is the only bird eating off it, I asked my neighbor the other day when they were going to Wal-mart to get a case of hot pepper suet, and they came back with no suet and the excuse that they were moving stuff around and they couldn't find it, between you and me, I think they did not want to look that hard! So let me know if you think that will work.:-O

Its a shame when something like that happens.
Give the suet a try and if the woodpecker ignores try elsewhere.

Success, I did not get a pic yet, but the red-bellied woodpecker was on the suet feeder! Also the Tufted Titmouse and the Chickadees.:-O:-O:-O

Martika glad you didnt give up on your feeder, after I made my upside down feeders it took the red bellies and others to get used to it, I built mine due to the black birds and crackles, heres a pic of a plieated enjoying mine.

The main reason I had mine built was the squirrels and starlings, the starlings can't find it and the squirrels are not even interested in it. If I could get the Pileated to eat off it my feet would not touch the ground for weeks! I am just glad something is eating off it, I was beginning to get really depressed. But I guess it was something new and they had to get used to it.

Its been snowing like crazy here and the birds have been hitting hit hard, the red=bellied came and I had the shot all lined up and my camera said card full. I will try again later after I format my card.8-P

How high does the suet feeder have to be before the Pileated Woodpecker eats off it? Someone on another page told me that mine was not high enough for the wp to get under, I can't afford to get another feeder, money is a little tight right now, so any advice would be helpful.
