Hello,
I agree with Bewick and Harry, its a juvenile GSW
I remember an old Alula paper about this topic. The pattern of the outer tail feathers is important.
Please note, that this bird has much white and only two narrow broken bars in the outermost tail-feather ( at the extreme end of variation for GSW from Germany, good for the local ssp
major). According to literature, this is bad for an hybrid, and rules out a pure Syrian Woodpecker.
A brocken black band in the neck like in this bird here is rare in juvenile GSW, but not necessarily a sign of Syrian Woodpecker ancestry. There are some threads here in BF, thanks again!
Here is another juvenile GSW with a broken neckband
Buntspecht EndeJuni 2016, Prenzlau, NE-Germany, June 2016)
I have seen juvenile GSW with even more pattern in the underparts in Germany, so I wouldnt see this as a proof of Syrian influence.
But this came out more confident than it is intended to be.I hope for more comments. Thanks!
