Wood peckers in UK drumming in September - not late winter/ early spring (1 Viewer)

I am well used to hearing lots of woodpecker drumming in late winter and early spring in the woods by my house in London UK.

BUT

For the last four days I have been hearing tremendous amounts of drumming. Yesterday it was going on throughout my 20 minute walk

Today there were considerable amounts of drumming in three different parts of the wood

Google says Woodpeckers “usually” drum in late winter/early spring

I can find nothing on the subject of LOTS of drumming September

Can anyone help me understand what is going on, please?

Hi Ben and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

Yes, unusual I think. Maybe they're trying to claim their winter territories? Here is a link to our Opus article on the Great Spotted Woodpecker, and another for the Lesser Spotted, I think you may have both in your area.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.
