Where's best value for bird food at moment (1 Viewer)

While I was away earlier this week my wife managed to source sunflower hearts for a good price. Here is her email to friends:

"Now that I am on bird feeding duty, I did a shop around to order more sunflower hearts before we run out. This place is by far the cheapest, even with £7 shipping it comes out about £15 less for 22.36KGS than anybody else. £34 all inclusive.

I'll let you know if the seeds are mostly intact. If they are, this looks to be the bargain place for bird food. If you order from them, call them, don't bother with their online ordering system, as it doesn't work.

Here's the number: 01582 833883"

Actually, one of the cheapest is here; £30 for 25kg, price includes next day delivery. Oh, and I've been using this place for years.|=)|

EDIT:

Oops, wrong price, I looked at "seed" instead of "hearts". Oh well, nevermind. I'll leave this post as a reminder not to rush replies.|=)|

If anyone is from west sussex and comes into Chichester bartholomews is the place to go, they are a wholesalers and sell to all the petshops etc and also sell to the public..I have been getting my stuff there for a while..todays lot sunflower hearts 13 kgs for £19.00 ..20 kgs winter bird mix about £9.50 and 100 fat balls £14.00...dont know if its cheap or not but for me its a case of drop in and pick it up no postage...

Just purchased from the aforementioned farm (1st time as I have run out of some items)
Fatballs £5.99 for 50
Niger seed £3.65 for 2Kg (drops to £1.50 per if you take larger amounts)
Mixed bird seed £8.50 for 20 Kg (not many S/F seeds in it but good price)

As these places havn't been mentioned.... 'feedem' are excellent and cheap, been using them a long time, based in the Hull area and contactable by phone - you can order by phone too (as well as online). free delivery over a certain price... and have never had a problem.... cheapest by far for niger seeds as far as i have found.
Also 'charlies' who also do mail order/internet as well as having the best country stores in the land.. they are welsh marches based.

edit... charlies sell fat balls WITHOUt the netting

For UK garden Bird watchers Wilkinsons sell fatballs for £6.49 per tub of 50. Unfortunately with nylon netting.

Can I request if you enjoy watching garden birds in the UK to join the BTO Garden Birdwatch Scheme Details on the BTO web site - just google BTO

seems to me there are 2 issues, cost of seed and feeder economy. I have found the best seed for the money is black oil sunflower, but of course in the wrong feeder spillage/waste can be high.

Lowest cost = right feed + right feeder + no rodents

right feed= high energy at low cost= black oil sunflower
right feeder = low waste/spillage + low cost
No Rodents = nothing to hold + no reward for trying + low cost

bird seed

By chance I found a 'good' supplier of 'good' quality bird food at a 'good' price.......that's 'good' isnt it:-O
I live in Orford/Warrington and its a farm shop just 1 mile from where I live.
Down side is he only sells in bulk e.g. mixed seed in 25Kg sacks. Similar for peanuts-think about £1.00 per kilo. Ideal if you have someone to split it with or go through a lot of it.
He also had excellent quality fresh veg' and eggs etc.
I dont want to post his address as I only met him the once. If anyone wants it and pm's me I will give directions.

Hi David

Does he sell sunflower hearts and nyjer seeds. Those are he ones that move in my garden. Dont mind buying them in bulk. I live in st helens

Yes

Haven't purchased sunflower seeds as I already have some but he does sell hearts and whole.........I know they were cheap but can't remember the price.

He also sells good quality veg at good prices e.g. bag of spuds @ 8p per pound )or lose @ 20p.......also eggs at good prices.

There's 2 Charlie's where I live and the town centre one is slightly more expensive than the independant pet shop for small quantities of seed. Their feeders are much cheaper however and I haven't been to the larger Charlies in town to check out the bulk prices on seed. With this weather I realy should, ask someone to give me a lift down and pick up a few sacks.
But as I walk to work every day, I take a two minute diversion and pick up the seeds I need as I go. The Local pet store seems to match most of the price I've seen above and they sell nijer, various mixes, striped or black sunflower and sunflower hearts with the convenience that you can pick up as much or little as you need. So I say if there's an independant pet shop in your area check them out.

Cheapest fatballs I've found though are 49p for 6 at Pryce Jonses, which I think is now owned by Pound STretcher.

Hello all - another forum with a bunch of fellow Cheshire dwellers! I get my sunflower hearts and nyger seeds from my local market too, really good value compared to the garden centres. Suet balls are cheaper from the local pound shop, I think.

I would be wary of buying cheap bird seed,we bought a 20 kg bag of bird seed from a well known pet store outlet,it was awful looked like pigeon feed, full of corn and split peas and very little else!!
