Hi, Can anyone tell me if Wheldrake Ings are accessable from Thorganby. I have been Via Wheldrake and bank island many times but Thorganby would be convenient.
Steph

Hi Steph, it's a long time since I visited Wheldrake and the Derwent Ings so things may have changed. I'm not aware of any access across the river except Ings Lane at Wheldrake. English Nature can be contacted at the York office 0300 060 1911

Hi Steph

The ings are only accessible from Bank Island or the car park by the bridge across the Derwent onto the ings. There is a viewing platform by the village hall onto Thorganby Ings but the area has no floodwater on it at present.

Cheers

Thanks to both of you.I was just wondering if the path carried on through the gate where it bends towards the last 2 hides. Maybe coming out by the Ferryboat. I worry a bit about parking by the bridge.
Thanks Steph

Parked at the bridge today, my first time at Wheldrake, about 10 other cars there. I was last one away about 5:30pm. Only thing I found irritating is that there are such alot of shooters in the area.

Barn Owl almost flew into me on way back to car! Should have gone to Specsavers...

regards

The footpath for the ings is on the opposite side of the river to the Ferryboat, so no way of connecting the two and there is no right of way to the north of the Ferryboat. I might also add that there is no access to the southern part of the reserve (on Wheldrake Ings) through the gate - this area is the refuge and is (should be) protected from disturbance.

The car park for the ings tends to be fine; there were problems there in the dim and distant past, though I can see why you might worry as it can be quiet down there. In that case you could park at Bank Island and either walk along the road and connect with the ings lane or walk along the river to come out at the bailey bridge.

Have a great time on the ings and what better way to finish off than with a drink at the Ferryboat....

Hope that helps.

Thanks again.
Ive been visiting Wheldrake Ings since 1997 when it was closed April-July to non YWT members, and always believed what you write is true. I discovered an old map which shows the path continuing through the gate and ending up at Bubwith bridge. The OS mapshows it terminating opposite the Ferryboat. Anyway as you say there is no river crossing. Ive had many great mornings (I go very early) including yesterday when I saw a peregrine. Barn owls are often seen but more regular at North Duffield.

Hi Steph

I remember the 'closed season' well - no one has taken any notice of that since the early 1980s when there used to be 'voluntary wardens' on site checking permits.

Must have missed you on Saturday, I was on from dawn onwards. As you'll know Barn Owls are very easy to see around Wheldrake (and the rest of the LDV). There are certain times of the year when it's more unusual not to see one (rather than see one). The viewing platform at Bank Island is very good for seeing them, as of course is Wheldrake Ings itself.

Over the weekend there was American Wigeon, Hen & Marsh Harrier, 40 Ruff, several hundred Golden Plover, at least 5 calling Water Rail, over 20 Whoopers, together with the impressive sight of large numbers of Wigeon and Teal, plus there have been up to 3,100 Greylags recently. The reserve itself is hardly watched, amazing isn't it!

Hi guys,

if anyone spots a pair of glasses either at bank island or at a hide on the ings, plesae can you PM me.

Thanks.

That obviously wasnt you in the combat jacket and blue baseball cap then. I was the first car in the carpark beside the bridge, was that you I wonder who was pulling up as I was walking down the path???
Wheldrake is my favourite reserve because it is so quiet. I dont agree with the RSPB type show/playground reserves.
The teal & wigeon were all over the place, Ruff were viewable from the water infront of 2nd hide. American wigeon from 4th hide and golden plover in the field to the south of 4th hide. I never saw any harriers or whooper swans sadly but the guy in the combat jacket told me he'd been watching a peregrine drinking which I took with a pinch of salt until it flew over our heads going back to the bridge. I have often seen roe deer on the reserve (on one occasion from about 10 feet).
Yes it is a brilliant reserve so long as whatever it is Natural England are building at Bank Island doesnt spoil it.
