These are mine. The logfeeder is just a log i drilled holes in and stuffed with a peanut butter/suet mixture. The woodpeckers and nuthatches never let it alone.

The other is just a Woodlink whole peanut feeder. its a gas to watch 10 blue jays fight over the peanuts. Or, Watching a small titmouse try to get one in its mouth and fly off.

I had a problem with squirrels raiding my feeder(filled with wild bird mix). I built a small feeder box (4"x4"x4") and nailed it to a tree near the feeder. I filled it with dry dog food in an attemt to keep the squirrels happy. Much to my suprise, not only do the squirrels love it, so do many larger birds. I have had magpies, crows, ravens, grackles and bluejays come for the dog food. The other day three ravens chased off the squirrels to eat. Not sure if dry dogfood will harm the birds, they seem to love it. Dog food bag says 100% nutrition. Seems like a nice addition to my backyard feeders.

I would think the dried dog food would swell up inside the birds stomach if fed dry. You could soak it first. Just a thought.

The most used bird feeder i think is the food that we give our chickens...the garden birds are quite adept at diving in and stealing the odd bit while the chickens aren't looking:cool:. Although of the ones which are supposed to be for teh garden bbirds it's the peanut feeder |=)|

The most "fun" feeders are the nectar feeders in the summer. Not only is it a real hoot to watch all the hummers squabble over perches, but other visitors include orioles, woodpeckers, finches and once a hummingbird hawkmoth.

Is that how far south the hummers and orioles go for the winter or do they normally go farther south. Looking forward to the first part of May to see the hummers and orioles here.

Pine cones

Our most popular feeder is a suet block. However, we get the most fun from watching birds at our hanging pine cones (covered with peanut butter and seeds), because of the way the cones swing around when birds land on them. The smaller birds don't have major problems but the larger birds have to develop feeding techniques. Yesterday our resdent N. Mockingbird took ags working out how to access a cone. It tried clinging to the cone but kept falling off. It then tried hovering next to it, but this didn't work at all. It finally learned to "walk" down the string and then hang from the string while it pecked at the cone from above.

I think it's always interesting watching birds (and other animals) working out solutions to problems.

I'm in South Miami, and we had a couple of hummers in our yard up till about a couple of weeks ago. I am kind of wondering where they went...

The most popular feeder in our yard is the 12-port 3-tiered Perky Pet Gardenview that contains the general seed mix. Everybody (blackbirds, grackles, cardinals, blue jays) always goes to that one first. They only go to the ones with the "good" seed, nut & fruit mix, if the Gardenview is full and a "line" waiting!

Although this morning we had 2 canary-winged parakeets come down to one of the other feeders. I was very excited!
