What are the birds flying over the test match in Pakistan? (1 Viewer)

At the test match England are currently playing in Pakistan when the cameras give a long range view of the pitch you can clearly see some large raptors (?) high in the sky particularly after tea. I have only seen one close up of these birds and the tail reminded me of a Red Kite.

Anyone know what these birds are?

Max.

Not seen any of the coverage (aint got sky), but over the border in India there are loads of Black Kites (especially in the cities) and the TMS commentators occasionally refer to Kites (and Mynahs). Don't know off hand what subspecies they are - I've seen lineatus subspecies = Black-eared Kite further north in Kazakstan, and the Indian ones are, I think, sometimes refered to as Pariah Kites.

James

ps - it's making grim listening this morning :storm: !!

vultures would perhaps be an appropriate metaphor. I haven't seen them but CMJ referred to kites on TMS yesterday.

Hi,
Don't have television but wouldguess black kites as the most common, along with brahminy and pariah as occasionals. Is pariah the same as black? Have watched test matches at Colombo and Galle where had loads of kingfisher sp over as well as kites and mynahs (starlings)

There have been some brilliant shots of Black Kites - where as at Lords they show the red London buses going past, here they are showing top quality flight views of Black Kite - excellent.

This post rminds me that there are those people who keep a TV list - great fun if you have the time!

Rob

PS - the Vultures will have to wait for another day - we held on for a draw!

People keep a TV list??????????????????????????
I'd be up to Phoebe Snetsinger's total by now if I did!!!!!! :eek!:

Wonder what Birds will be above Lahore?

Maybe someone should send a message out to the England players telling them they're Black Kites - then they can spend more time watching the game rather than trying to ID the birds passing overhead!!! Wonder if Strauss had one in the corner of his eye when he dropped that catch earlier ;)

Cheers,

Well, I keep a TV list. :king: I restrict it to European birds, cos I haven't a hope of IDing anything else. The tough ones are where you only get a quick shot and the narrator doesn't mention it if it's a wildlife programme. It sure livens up some otherwise dull programmes. It all started when watching a holiday programme about some place in Spain and I could hear a Hoopoe calling in the background. Sad or what? :'D

Black Kites? Surely it must have been some vultures picking up the stench of that rotten England batting performance. :C

Or more likely, on the atmos tape they used. Bird sounds on TV programs aren't tickable in my view - the number of times you hear Swallows in December on TV!!

And on many episodes of All Creatures Great and Small, the calls of Bee-eaters overhead in the Yorkshire Dales. Perhaps there is a small unknown breeding population up in them thar hills (o)<

Or maybe they bred there in the 1930s when the program was set ;-).

Bee-eaters heard just last week ona program set in England.

A few years ago CBS in the US was found to be adding bird song to its golf coverage. It was found out when it added the call of a bird that didn't occur in the locality.

It's only dull to those who don't understand it!

Grew up in Kenya, and actually played the game a few times. Then I switched to a real sport, Rugger, and never looked back. Mind you, used to have great Sunday afternoons at the Mombasa Sports Club, knocking back a couple of cold ones:)
