West Midlands/Warwickshire local patches. (2 Viewers)

I've seen a couple of reports from Morton Bagot mentioning the second and third pools from the road. Can anyone give me directions as to whereabouts in Morton Bagot the pools are and where to park, best place to watch from etc.

Many thanks!

Only ever been a couple of times, and that was for the shrike early last year.

Parking was along the road, under the pylons then we walked along the footpath Millennium Way. There were some pools but I have no idea how many but I'm sure they must be the ones.

Good luck

Hi Pat,
I've been there a good many times. I've attached a map showing the locations of the wetlands that I know of in red. As Jeff says, park at the side of the road (marked "P" on the map). Please view the wetlands from public footpaths, although to get to the pools beyond the first, the farmer apparently doesn't mind people walking along the edge of the arable field west of the first pool, off the one public footpath to another footpath (red arrow on map). Today, having spoken to the birder who found the Mandarin, I couldn't quite picture which of the pools he was referring to, but habitat-wise I think it's probably the small western one that he saw it at. The fishing pond is popular with the ducks when there's no anglers there, so it might be there but you'll have to follow the footpath through several fields to view it properly. The area is really good for farmland birds, and the pools have attracted quite a lot of wader species over the last few years - it's under Higher Level Stewardship and it's a pity there's few other such sites elsewhere in the county. Hope the map is useful to you or other birders.
Kind regards,
Matt

Bit of a quiz :- How many different waders can you see in this shot? Taken today somewhere in Warwickshire.

Nice shots Max, did you see the Curlew sands?

Some nice inland wader passage there recently, have you seen Daves shots of the Knot?

Gareth

What? No mention of the Red-necked phalarope? has one been to see it or is the Warks thread wel and truly dead?

Hopefully it'll stay till tomorrow afternoon and will be feeding right on the shore with stonking views to be had.

Now reporting Warwickshire sightings on the Warwickshire Thread, Gareth ;) I for one have now abandoned the WM & W thread unless I see something in West Midlands.

Went after work tonight, very distant still but a sighting never the less. Also had 4 black terns although someone mentioned 7. Little tern and little gull also being looked for by a couple of folks but I had to head home. :-C

Burton dasset hills 11/09/10

Had an early morning visit hoping to do a visible migration survey.
Unfortunately the conditions were por and ther was little movement so I decided
to just have an amble around looking for downed migrants.

Not a lot around, and hard to tell if there were local birds or migrants, but:
Yellow wagtails - 19 + (including a group of 8)
Pied wagtails - 10+
Meadow pipits - 16 (some obvious migrants)
Goldcrest - 7
Chiffchaff - 4
Willow warbler - 2 (one singing!)
Hirundines - 1 flock of c100 over east mostly swallow but some House martins
