Wembury (Devon) Gyr 1998 (3 Viewers)

Has anyone got a photo of this bird, or can anyone provide a link?

I am simply putting together my own folder of photos of UK Gyr Falcon records.

Can't find a photo of the Wembury Gyr anywhere. Though i know 1998 would have been post-popularist birding photography.

At Wembury, if my memory serves me well, it was seen mostly as a distant white blob offshore on the Mewstone but i may be wrong. The same bird was also seen across the water at Rame Head in Cornwall, don't know if anyone got a photo there or not. Good luck anyhow.

That may well account for the lack or indeed absence of photos, thanks for the feedback Pedro.

I have got a photo of it I purchased off a photographer in 1998 but I can't remember who I bought it off. It's a bit blurred but you can tell its a Gyr.

Can't speak for the Wembury one, but the 1986 Gyr at Berry Head in Devon was a white blob in the pre-dawn hours of 1st April ...didn't stay a blob when the light came though! The whitest Gyr imagineable.

Any photos of this one Wolfbirder?

The pic I have of the Wembury Gyr was taken by the legendary bird paparazzo George Reszeter from Oxfordshire. I`ve attached it here in all its glory( not bad considering the distance involved), but will remove it immediately if George threatens to sue me over copyright!!;)

This bird was quality, 8 years old and a 10 minute walk from my house! Saw it bathing in the quarry pools

An amazing thing about the Berry Head and Wembury Gyrs is that they were both found by the same person, Nik Ward. I doubt if anyone else has managed that ?

Brilliant Snowcap, thank you. It looks an impressive and very white bird :t:

Jos,

blurred photo of the Berry Head bird. Also looks a cracking individual.

The Berry Head bird was the best of the five Gyrs I have seen in Britain. Persil white with minimal neat black markings, Both Tim Loseby and Pete Wheeler had awesome photos of it.

Like the Stafford Belted K I heard the news on 1st April and my initial reaction was pull the other one, its got bells on... fortunately in neither case did I listen to my doubt.

I was on a Scotland trip when we got news it had gone to roost in Devon on the 31st March ....a long drive south overnight with a constant nagging fear we'd arrive to a big billboard labelled April Fool!

Changing tact slightly do you know how to contact Pete Wheeler, whom you mention above? I know he has a photo of a different species - Blyth's Reed Warbler that i would love to see, that was at Red Rocks, Cheshire. It was muted as possibly being Long-Billed Reed Warbler. No one else photographed it. I think he keeps photos to himself as a private collection, that is his perogative of course. But I would love to ask him if I could pay for a private copy.

Question 2 - having endlessly googled for the Stepper Point Gyr I found a quite superb photo of it whilst it was across the bay at Pentire Point, which I am reluctant to download and post here (tho I would love to share with others) as it has a huge "C" and "Copywright" emblazened across the front. I know what copywright means, but does that simply mean the original is copywright, or is it ok to post this 'purposelly damaged' form of the image, that is indeed in the public domain because you can see it by googling?

Copyright is an inalienable right so it is not affected by deliberate obscuring of the image (indeed you could argue that changing the image in that way actually creates new intellectual property on which trhe run-out date would be further down the line?) How you found it is not relevant. Sorry!

Has the photographer not left contact details?

I don't know how to contact Pete Wheeler and although I have heard he still birds I haven't seen him around for years. Have you tried googling him?

Edit: rather than download the pic can you not put in a link to it? That would not affect the copyright.

Appreciate the feedback John, many thanks

Here is the link to that super photo of the 2007 Cornwall Stepper Point Gyr across the bay at Pentire Point..... a magnificent beast of a bird too, though immature and not quite as white as the Berry Head. I enjoyed views just like this down to 30 metres.

On a slightly tangential tack, does anyone know if a photo exists of the Blacktoft Hudsonian Godwit when it returned and was in summer plumage, 1984 I think?
