They look like sandpipers or stints to me. Those more familiar with the UK birds will know better though...

Dunlin and Redshank in the first photo and Bar-tailed Godwit in the second. Bar-tails are getting rather scarce on the Wirral - although numbers have risen this winter. At one time you would have got up to a thousand roosting at West Kirby and at Hoylake. Dunlin numers are still high though - thankfully.

Thanks Chris. Sounds like you know the area? At the weekend I walked the coastal path from West Kirby to Wallasey. Can you recommend other areas of the Wirral worth a visit? Going down to Parkgate at the weekend.

If you're going for the high tides at the weekend it migt be worthwhile catching the train to West Kirby and walking the Wirral Way to Parkgate ( I'll probably be doing that as I'll be home then ). Hilbre Island is always ( well almost always ;) ) worth the effort. Check out the Dee Estuary website, it's full of good info about the birds and the area.

Chris

Hope to see you at Parkgate - I'm the grey haired old fart with an olive tweed flat hat with a badge of a Black-tailed Godwit on it:t:

Im going to Parkgate on Friday and will perhaps do the walk to Parkgate on Sunday if Ive got the energy! Hilbre Island is certainly somewhere I plan to visit in the near future. I'll keep an eye out for your hat on my travels.

Thanks again

Try Inner Marsh Farm (off Denhall Lane, Burton). Several other good sites along the estuary. I'd recommmend Thurstaston has a visitor centre and feeding station. Always worth a visit.

i,ll be at parkgate hopefully ,fri ,sat ,sun this week as its the mega high tide weekend 10.2 metres predicted on sunday ,the sea comes right up to the old sea wall and all the animals on the marsh either get ashore safely or drown in the process ,there are usually every type of bird of prey waiting for them .
the best place is to see things from. is park at the old baths rspb car park if space permits and then walk along the sea wall towards the golf course .and wait for the tide its definitely a spectacle worth seeing ;);)

Thanks for the advice. Will certainly be going to Inner Marsh and Thurstaston as well. Away from the visitor centre, is there much to see?

Although the tide might come right in at Parkgate tomorrow - it was considerably higher than the forcast 9.1m at West Kirby today - the best place will be Riverbank Road at Heswall. You are right by the gutter and at the northern edge of the marsh where the SEO's tend to hang out.

A series of very high (10+m) tides for the next few days, so worth a visit to Heswall.

I used to walk from Hoylake/West Kirby down to Burton Marsh/Inner Marsh Farm quite regularly - it's all pretty good. The Parkgate high tide is well worth the effort. Other sites I used to do were Stapleton Woods in Caldy and Hoylake Langfields. If you fancy the walk out, Hilbre Island was also good, especially in the right weather conditions.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Went down to Parkgate today but a decent high tide failed to materialise. Probably there a day or two early by the sounds of things! Did see a nice Hen harrier though.

Also visited Inner Marsh Farm for the first time. Nice site but the weather was freezing.
