Very busy at the bird feeder today! (9 Viewers)

Weather has come up trumps here . . . . Moorhen under the feeders, must be the same bird as a few years ago

That's a result! You must live near water?

I just can't believe this weather. -3 degrees here and a blizzard coming down. This time last year I was readying the lawn mower to cut the grass!
As far as the birds are concerned, I'd normally be reducing the food I put out as Spring arrives, up to now though I'm putting out winter quantities.
In the pic below (which I've just taken) you can see a male Pheasant. My wife calls him Henry, as he appears to have six wives, as seen here! These birds will eat seeds, nuts, suet etc, but they are partial to cooked pasta, which they're eating here:

3 or 4 inches of snow here this morning.

Peanut feeder was half full of snow, everything else was coverd.

Food now out, let's see if the winds and blizzards have brought anything in B :)

just been confirmed, thought a few days ago that it was one, a nice MEALY REDPOLL.:t:

Congrats - mine never showed again, in fact this winter held very small numbers of Lssr Redpoll here. Never really sustaining more than a dozen or so, however the reverse can be said of the Siskin with 40+ mid winter and still a dozen or so now

The resident male Blackcap has been joined by another male and the Siskins continue to visit..I guess held up by the snow.

Nice pic, Mark. Good numbers of pheasants there.

Great news, Roger:t: As with BFB, very few Redpolls all winter here. In fact I've been throwing nijer seed away from the feeders as its been going mouldy in the feeders.

Nice bird and pic, Brian. It was around this time last year that I had a Blackcap in the garden.

Today's highlights: Male Sparrowhawk on several hunting attempts and has got his confidence up to sit on the fence, 2 metres away from where I sit and watch, 8 LTTs (back to their family group), single Redpoll, 3 Bullfinches, 3 Robins and a Goldcrest. No Goldfinch again.

If ever there was a good time to take up photography!

Good shots BFB and Brian2

Windy and snowy yesterday in Colerane (not settling): 3 Woodpigeon, highest numbers seen here so far. 5 Rooks was also a good total but have had more. Magpie stuffing pieces of toast into the lawn and turfing over them is always hilarious!

Today still very windy, but sunny!! Lesser Redpoll, Siskin x 4, Goldie x 5, Chaffnch x 6, Blackbird x 2, Blue Tit, Robin, Feral Pigeon x 8 hoovering up.

very cold Blue Tit

Just joined the site today to get some advice on finding a very cold and disorientated blue tit in my garden. watched it feed on peanuts from the ground for a few hours, didn't fly away like the rest of the feeding frenzy. At dark I lifted it without it struggling and put it in a cardboard box with water food and a luke warm water bottle. What now ? Do I keep it in the box for a few days or let it go as soon as its warmed up ? Sub Zero temperatures with us the past few days and severe snow storm. Please help if you can.

Nothing to lose on this one I think, leave it outside in sub zero temps and with it not looking to roost the weather will probably kill it, so as long as it is feeding it is possibly gaining strength. I would try it outside in the morning so you can see its movements, hopefully it will fly off, maybe perch and feed normally or may just go straight to ground again.... you should addd your message to the welcome thread you will probably get others advising also

Good Luck with this one

Almost Easter Sunday and still getting snow and below freezing temps. The Pine Siskins and Red-breasted Nuthatches still visiting our feeders along with the regulars!

No snow or freezing temps here, Larry, but a coldish spell has moved in. Some birds I thought had disappeared have reappeared, including Orange-crowned Warbler, Red-breasted Nuthatches and American Goldfinches.

My daily yard count continues to be 20 or more species.

I was just thinking today it would be nice to see a male Brambling at this time of year rather than the usual female that's been turning up and lo and behold..... ;)

Also lots of Siskins again and the some of the males are looking absolutely stunning. Will have to put the hide out I reckon.

Goldfinches gearing up for spring?

Over the winter the goldfinches have always seemed very polite - waiting their turn for a port on the nyger feeder to become free. But over the last week they've been getting much more aggressive, driving away the other goldies - even when every other port is empty.

I presume they're getting ready for spring, when competition for food may be much more important.

Goldcrest before work at 6.30 this morning.

Early this evevning I saw a Blackbird visiting the conifer bushes where it nested last year, but I didn't see any nest material going in. I also checked the nest box camera after dark and strangely no roosting Blue Tit.

Had a nice pair of house finches round, this morning...and then a pair of great, ugly, messy PIGEONS scared them away! I've been getting a lot of pigeons, lately. Can't imagine where they're coming from; I never used to get pigeons.
