Upton Warren (31 Viewers)

Gert -in case your forum messages set up doesn't inform you by email as well, just a note to say that there is a p.m. or conversation as they now call it in your box.
Phil A thanks for alerting Gert the last time Could you do so again please? Many thanks.

Phil E

First off wishing the Upton followers a Happy and hopefully better new year.

If anyone could have a word with that Glossy at Slimbridge and get it to drop in be a good start.

Don't recall anything unusual for a while?

Could I ask is this still the best pla e for Upton news or is it twitter perhaps someone can advise.

To add to the discussion re access to flashes out of hours.

It has long been my opinion that ideally a permissive path could be created from the Moors going around the back of the sailing lake.

Joining both halves of the reserve and being able to utilize some established parking seemed a good idea.

I did actually write to the Trust about this along time ago but did not even receive a reply.

Please note a new blog has been set up for all sightings and information related to Upton Warren, curated by reserve regular Gert Corfield. Live sightings "from the field" will continue on Twitter from the likes of John Belsey, Andy Pitt, Mike Wakeman, Phil Wood, Dave Jackson and Gert himself to name a few.

Hi

Gert updates this blog regularly - you will find great updates here.

Hi Zeberdy,
Can I just say that patience may be a virtue at the moment. I'll say no more.

There is a path around the back of the sailing lake but all of this comes down to security ( the reason for shutting off the usual access point for pedestrians)and the need for fencing on health and safety grounds. Yes the fishermen use that path but it is quite tortuous and as I recall there is no direct route out to the Salwarpe path or the Trust's Salwarpe path at that point.
The easiest access would be off the public Salwarpe footpath by the bridge and through Aztec's grounds immediately behind the lorry park and garage but since the gates to both car parks are locked and there is no pedestrian access at the moment, this is a non starter. It has been looked at.

Ultimately we need to either find a new access point with parking or come to some agreement with Aztec. If all else fails maybe we will need to reopen the original access point off the public footpath opposite the lower end of Webbs.. Negotiated parking with Webbs maybe?

Anyway hang in there
regards
Phil E

Input #uptonwarren on Twitter, most of the regulars use this tag their tweets.
I don`t wish to upset anyone, but if one is from another county etc. and don`t know "most (or any) regulars" of the upton "Twitters" names, then how are they to follow what use to be one of best blogs on bird forum. Even Norfolk is devoid of blogs, and I don`t know a single Twitterer from there. Other than Penny Clarke`s brilliant reports. Thank goodness Gert came to the rescue:).

I`m NOT on twitter and do not intend to be.

I don't think you need to have a Twitter account to be able to search for a 'tag'... so I'm told. Assuming that is correct, you don't need to know any 'Twitter names', just use the tag #uptonwarren.

Morning all
It may be me - probably is so everybody says!
Maybe the search engine I use!
Keeping up with tags @names etc is doing my head in!
Seriously though can I make this set of observations:-

I do not subscribe to twitter and so cannot post replies but generally I can read them Some days I can even expand individual conversations to see what the tweet is actually about.

I have done what was suggested and input #uptonwarren. In the end I had to put in - twitter#uptonwarren- or nothing useful comes up. Had to tell my server that was what I wanted and I got it - the first time! Fortunately I book marked it.
So going to that site did give me a lot of @names to follow up on.

However without using the bookmark I have ended up with lots of different users connected to UW. Young Upstarts came up in several different way with no specific reference to #upton warren.
One gave me his twitter site. Good. Another gave me his site but engaged in a conversation with a Dr. Ben - discussion I think to do with the field at UW which has bird seed as a crop. It looked interesting but it was difficult to follow and I would not like to say I fully understand what is going on.

In the beginning you could access for example @upstarts1979 and pick up some of the other regulars where he was following them - at the side in the" You might like boxes". But things change and most people now have other things coming up there.

Should say at this point that I do appreciate Gert's blog.

So really, I am still disappointed that this site has lapsed into its current state. It was a good place to receive news of birds and issues and information generally. In the end the vagaries of following all and sundry is time consuming and much though some twitter folk are worth reading, not something I wish to spend my time on.
So yes the #uptonwarren does work but persevere!
Okay so its probably easy - it's just me! I can't even find the imogee box to add any here!!

Many Thanks for the replies concerning Upton Warren updates I'm sure it may help a few people.

So I think that Twitter is the best place to receive live updates to your mobile phone as they are published that may be important to some with regard to recent sighting and perhaps this Forum is best for general discussion on Upton Warren and the Upton warren blog at Upton Warren Bird News

People should not have concerns about using twitter but I would advise setting up a new Junk email on gmail for this and any other things that require similar registration with an email address. Once you have a new email address its easy to download the twitter app and register and from there search for UptonWarren for example to Follow as well of lots of other people and organizations of interest to Birders.

There does seem to have been a change on Twitter that means in order to get notifications you have to click on the (Bell) next to (Following) in the top right corner that opens a new Account notifications screen and select (All Tweets).

One thing I would say is that the account shown in your screen-grab is no longer used, so not worth following. As previously mentioned, using #uptonwarren in the search function should produce tweets posted with this hashtag, which many(most?) regulars use.

Flashes mostly frozen this afternoon, most of the better birds on sailing pool, 2 little egret, female goosander, Kingfisher, shoveler, tufted, cormorant, mute swans, coot

Thanks for reply , any reason why uptonwarren twitter account is not use seems most logical place to post updates ? using the #uptonwarren only allows you to search for posts with it not follow it and get automatic updates as would be the case if the uptonwarren Twitter page was used.

For instance following Ladywalk NR account on Twitter or any other account allows you to get alerts if set up on phone to receive them as I highlighted.

Happy to be corrected but don't think you can get alerts for search terms such as #uptonwarren and possible explains issue where bird was having.

I can just about access here ( on PC ) and can even see it on my phone BUT Twitter is a no go as I have no understanding as to what the hell is going on when I look at it.......just a suggestion....as the people who do do twitter and seem savy on these things are they able to copy their updates and put them on here....or dont things work like that.

A summary of the position is as follows:

  • There is now a detailed daily round-up posted day in, day out by Gert (many thanks Gert)
  • The majority of the regular viewers (JTB, Mike W, Andy P, Phil W, Dave J, James BS etc) now don't frequent the forum
  • News goes out live on Twitter
  • No one is willing to duplicate tasks in posting here
  • Notable news (county scarcity and above) will go out on the various bird information services
  • The gap would therefore be 'in day' news on sub rarities (Wheatear, Blackwit)
  • The operator of the twitter account @uptonwarren is not a reserve regular (forgotten who owns the account) and it isn't updated
  • Personally I would take the view if you are interested in news go look for it!

So, now you know people - FIFO.
One of the reasons the Twitterati prefer that platform in this context, is the facility that allows users to block other users.
I don't believe this forum allows this to happen.
In my own experience here, blocking has occurred because some people don't like comment, criticism or challenge to a course of action they have taken. In the normal course of events these exchanges would have taken place face to face in one of the hides at the reserve as part of the usual and regular lively discourse, denied for large periods of 2020/2021 by the extended and in some peoples view unjustified closure of the reserve.
Those who have achieved positions of responsibility at the reserve e.g. volunteer reserve managers might consider a more mature, responsible and inclusive response than Twitter blocking, to the push back that they don't like.

I'm far too antiquated to know what FIFO means, so can't comment on that.
Re blocking, I can confirm I have blocked no-one on my Twitter account, although I am aware I have been blocked by at least a couple of others (not Upton-related as far as I can glean) for whatever reason. I cannot comment on blocking on anyone else's Twitter account.

As far as I know the @uptonwarren Twitter account was set-up by an individual and he no longer maintains the account. Given that he didn't follow (m)any people that followed him that would, as far as I understand things, prevent posts, other than anything he posted himself, appearing on the account.
