Upton Warren (27 Viewers)

May finished on 112 species; today's Great White Egret takes the year list to 140. Still plenty of birds that could be added in the next 7 months including Little Stint, Curlew Sand, Spotted Redshank, Yellow-legged Gull, Rock Pipit, Ruff, Goldeneye and Garganey.

Now thats a good present; all you need is that Hoopoe from 2011 to re-appear B :)

Yes, that was definitely my best Birthday present - although the bottle of Badger Poacher's Choice ale bought for me by my brother, and which I have just consumed, runs it a close second.B :)

I had my first Roller (the Yorkshire bird) on my Birthday last year, but an Upton Warren life tick this year is just as pleasing. The Hoopoe may have to wait until June 1st next year.;)

A couple of distant shots of the Great White Egret on the 3rd flash:

Pictures for Timmy Jones

These shots were asked for by Tim (you have PM).
They're the only other shots I have of the large juvenile gull that appeared at about 6am yesterday at the Flashes. They were previously discarded and not used on the grounds of them being bo77ocks! ;)

Thanks for posting further photos of this interesting 2cy (1w/1s) gull.

First off it caught my eye from the first photo on account of, rather grey and pale mantle, scapulars, lesser and median coverts, a pale trailing edge to the greater coverts, uniform secondaries and tertials and a pale and sleek head shape. These features point towards Caspian Gull.

I would say it is probably not a Yellow-legged Gull due to the obviously pale innner webs shown on p4-6 (could be the light though)

The tail shows a dark terminal band but quite a bit of dark above this, which seems too dark for it to be a Caspian Gull, which I why I requested more photos.

From the further photos added, some give a Great Black-backed Gull impression, however I think we can rule that out on account of the amount of dark in the tail band.

Further features that can be seen in these additional photos are an obvious pale bar along the median coverts, this would suggest 2nd generation median coverts which would support its Caspian credentials, an overall long winged and at times Common Gull feel (first and second photos).

Also although closed in most of the photos, the tail seems to show very white bases to the tail feathers and white upper tail coverts.

In the 4th photo it appears to show a dark underwing, but I would suggest that this is to do with the lighting in this photo.

In my opinion this bird is showing some strong features of a 2cy Caspian Gull but I wouldn't like to safely rule out Herring Gull!

If anyone else took any photos of a large immature gull yesterday it would be useful to post them up, or keep an eye out for it today.

Hope that wasn't too boring, much more interesting than a large white heron! 8-P

Just had text from Dave J who is on site at the moment, NO sign of GWE by 10am.
Unfortunately the original brood of 4 GCG chicks has fallen to 1, a LBBG has just taken another chick:-C
On a positive note though there were 2 redshank and 27 adults avocet and 28 chicks.:t:

John after looking at the photographs of the gull and then checking in the Helm guide book Gulls of Europe, Asia & North America I would say this stands a 99% chance of being a young Caspian Gull it's that 1% chance with the shape of the head that still makes me wonder.

I'll repost the pictures (along with John's - I'll buy him a pint at lunchtime) in the Species ID section. There are one or two real gull aficionados in there.

For me the long, shallow sloping forehead is one of the better pro Caspian features albeit I have never really studied this on a bird in flight. Lets see what the larus boys such as Steve Arlow and Lou S make of it in the ID forum

Here's Lou's opinion:
"the slender wings are due to moult gap in inner primaries. retained p4 and p5 are too dark on outer web, greater coverts appear unpatterened at this stage (worn), so this looks best for a 1st summer (2cy) LBBG to me. slightly advanced in primary moult."

The bird that Kingfisher Blue (John?) has posted looks to me to be a different bird to what Sy has posted photos of, Kingfisher Blue's photo appears to show a 2cy Lesser Black-backed Gull, from Sy's photos I can't see that bird being a LBBG due to extensive pale window on its inner primaries.

Immature gulls at this time of year are tricky due to wear and moult!

Late pics......of a Tern at the Moors the other night.....no good with Terns/Gulls I.D.
