Hello!
I saw a bird today and can't I.D. it. I've spent hours trying.

It was a medium sized bird.
It had a black stripe through the eye, black shoulders and black tail.
It was a greyish yellowish color on the back.
White belly.
It had a yellow patch on its forehead.

Thank you!

The only bird that I can compute...based on your description (but it ain't medium sized..unless you've been looking at hummers for too long), is Golden-crowned kinglet?

cheers

It was sitting on a wire in between two homes in the country. It's yellow patch above its beak was not an outstanding bright yellow. It sat there for a good 10 minutes - a mockingbird was sitting on the powerline also about 15 feet away from it. It was late in the day but not dusk yet. I stared at it several times with binoculars. I saw it was very different from anything I had seen before in the yard (I recently became interested in observing birds). Other birds we have here include cardinals, finches, sparrows, barn swallows, mockingbirds, blackbirds, killdeer, great blue heron (there is a pond across the street), hummingbirds, titmouse, geese, carolina chickadee, cowbirds, grackels, blue grosbeak and turkey.
