Thoughts on feeding during summer? (1 Viewer)

I'll be closing on a house next week and I was talking to my father about getting some bird feeders put up around my property. As we were talking he tells me I shouldn't feed them during summer months as it isn't natural. I would like to photograph and enjoy these birds and sitting outside with a camera during the cold winter months just doesn't sound all that pleasing. What are your thoughts about feeding during summer months. I figure there is no harm with feeding during the summer, they will either get food at my house or in the wild.

thanks

Hi

The general consensus now seems to be that it is OK to carry on feeding the birds through the summer months. I certainly do! Some companies who sell bird seeds do special "summer" mixes. Take a look at this website ...

Carry on feeding and enjoying the birds!

Hi

My feeders are actually used more in Summer than Winter. Maybe everyone else takes theirs away.

The house sparrows in particular and of course the starlings - they always have hungry young. The blackbirds get tamer coming for food as does the robin. I am in the Uk though

I kind of knew I wanted to feed during the summer all along. There are birds around here during the summer that migrate south during winter. I would want the opportunity to view them while they are around.

thanks again

p.s. - I'm in Massachusetts, the New England part of the U.S.

I feed all year round but vary what I put out, I can't put any sort of fat out during spring/summer as the Jackdaws take it all, at the mo it's Black Sunflowers, nuts and nyjer for the Goldfinches, in winter I also put out fat blocks.

Feeders used to be quieter during summer months but now I get through a lot sunflower seed all year round.
