SX40 Super Zoom (1 Viewer)

Well, I am still soldiering on with the SX40. I was tempted to upgrade to the SX50, but decied to stay with what I had. I will wait for the SX60 to hit the shops.;)
The SX40 is just as good as the SX50 as far as IQ goes from my experience. The only real difference is the increased focal length so if you can live without that then there is no point in upgrading.

Yesterday, for the first time in my life I saw not only one, but a whole flock of Waxwings! I've wanted to see one for quite some time now, but this is the first time I've seen any in my street. In fact, they were in the tree right outside the upstairs window of a room I was currently occupying.

They were flying down to a berry-filled bush on the opposite side of the road, and then flying back to the tree to eat the berries. They're definitely wonderful birds. Not only to see, but to hear too. It was their calls that I noticed before actually seeing them. And what a peculiar call it is. Fantastic, absolutely brilliant!

Consider me chuffed.

I do keep wondering whether to make the move over to the SX50 just for the sake of the increased focal length. In the meantime I've been shooting exclusively of late using the 2.0x 'converter' and to be honest, I can't really see much difference in IQ with or without it.

To David: I use the same settings than Andy's with a 1/3 exp. correction. Took the pic 2m away zoomed-in and voilà! not a lot of light as it was already 19.30. All pics are made handheld.

Same settings on the pic below I just took today

I've just done a quick search and DPP is still available as is the patch. If you search for my post on this subject within this thread you should be up and running again in no time.

SX40 one from yesterday.

I see Roy C is showing us the way not only with how to use these great little Bridge cameras, but also what can be achieved if you have some photo editing skills. (More than some in Roy's case ) I have learnt a lot from these threads that has improved my photography. Still a long long way to go for me, but I'm enjoying the journey. One from last night. Editing done in iPhoto on iPad.

A few shots from Finland

It´s been really a joy to find this thread. SX40 is a wonderful camera, even though sometimes it´s frustrating to capture birds flying really fast or hiding in a forest. Last spring I tried to take photos of a Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker in a dark, dense Finnish forest and it was a total nightmare :)

But I´ve learned a lot from this thread and will keep on practising. Thanks for you all who have shared your superb photos. Here are a few shots from the last couple of days.
