SX40 Super Zoom (2 Viewers)

I am using a 67-58mm and a 58-43mm step down ring combo to attach my Raynox to this camera using Canon's adapter ring. This creates too much distance between the lens and the Raynox for my liking so is anyone able to point me in the direction of a solution for going from the 67mm straight to the 43mm thread in one plane/unit?

Regards,
Andrew.

Not sure what's happened here. If it were me, and I couldn't remember what I'd one to get it like this in the first place, I'd try 'Miscellaneous Stuff'>'Reset Options to Default'. Failing that, I'd delete the lot and re-install to be on the safe side.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Andy.

Andy
Yeah think thats the best bet i will just format card and reinstall.

Thanks

Bob

Can some one tell me how to get the CHDK onto your card. I save the file from acid to my desktop and then put it on my card and nothing happens. My card is 32gb is this the problem, as i read some where you have to do other stuff.

Help appreciated, as i would like to use the scn mode and set my shutter speed myself.

Cheers Paul

Yeah i had the same problem, then i read somewhere that the card must be
4GB Max or it wont work.

I don't think that can be right as I have mine working on a 16Gb card

OK Good to hear that,i will try to load again on a bigger card as after formating and reloading my original card the error problem is still there so i will retry on a new card as original may well be corropted.
I am still getting the fuLL CDHK menu up but the script error is preventing me taking shots while in CDHK mode.

Just tried with a new 8gb card loaded onto camera no problem but script still showing next to red alt on image page, like i said before i can change script but cant seem to clear it and while this is showing it wont let me shoot in CDHK.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Bob,

I may be mis-understanding you here but bear with me...

If <Alt> is showing, you can't shoot with the camera anyway. You should only have <Alt> up to access the CHDK menu instead of the default menu. You make your changes and then turn <Alt> off by pressing the 'short cut' button on the camera. Once <Alt> is gone from the display, you can begin to take shots.

If this doesn't cure it, the best I can suggest is that you ask for assistance over on the CHDK forum.

I agree, but I think you can take shots with the <Alt> showing but only if running a script.

I find CHDK as unintuitive as it is helpful, but my understanding is <Alt> is only needed to be visible to change the camera settings OR run a script.

Once settings are changed in the main CHDK menu, they will be held whether or not you are running a script.

Sorry if that adds more confusion :smoke:

Seems to have gone quiet on here lately so thought I would upload a few snaps from today just to keep the thread going.

Well finally took the plunge and bought an SX40. Had it for a couple of weeks now but due to work /family commitments not had much time to test it out. It does exactly what I want as primarily a birder that occasionally likes to get some record shots when the conditions are right. Some of the issues raised in the various forums I think are due to people comparing it to a DSLR, well I am coming from the opposite direction with my trusty old Coolpix 990 so things like the EVF and download speed are very much an improvement for me ;) Not sure about downloading the CHDK yet as I will then have some more things to faff around with and as I said I’m a birder first. Here are a few shots from the last couple of weeks.

Regards

John

Indeed - gulls in waves is cracking. Don't think I'd know where to start to get that sort of shot. Truly excellent and one of the best shots I've seen taken with this camera. I think I need to put some time into learning about how to use my SX40 properly.

Nice Roy.
I've beven using the SX40 in Singapore this week and hopefully have some good shots.
An SX50 might match the Nikon P510 1000 mm.

think this sums up the SX40 spot on John :t:, certainly less cumbersome and quicker than digiscoping in my experience.
Although for the pure bird photographer it falls well short of a decent DSLR set-up IMHO.After selling my DSLR birding lens I had high hopes that the SX40 would do me OK. It looked promising when getting near to the birds in the garden but using it in the estuary for waders it falls well short when shooting from a distance as fine detail is just not there. In this respect I am now pondering on splashing out mega bucks for a long DSLR lens again :C :C :C

BTW this is not knocking the SX40 as for the money is a great little Camera for record shots and a general little walkabout.

Here's a fun demo of the SX40 from today.

I took the boys to the Battleship Massachusetts, a WWII Battleship.

First is a photo out the bridge towards the bow.
Then I noticed some interesting looking tan things on the big gun in front. Zooming in is what those tan things are.

That shell is on the top of that big gun in front though you can't hardly see it in the first photo. (A gull must of dropped it there. There are several.)

Both photos are taken from the same spot.

Nice example of what the SX40 can do. Well done.

As promised a few snaps with the SX40HS from my recent trip to Singpore. Light was off a bit due the annual smoke from burning of forests in Indonesia.
