The surfbirds website appears to have been down for the last few days. It started by not being able to access the trip reports section of the site but now I am getting the timeout for the main page too.

Hosting Server Connect Timeout

HTTP 502 — Unable to Connect to the Origin Server

THis is happening on both Firefox and Edge so doesn't appear to be browser related

Does anyone know what the story is here?

All we have to go on is here, unless someone has insider info:

Error Details:

  • Error Code: HTTP 502
  • Error Message: Backend or gateway connection timeout.
  • Server ID: 13018

What's going on?

  • Origin server might be down
  • Sucuri Network blocked by Origin Firewall

What can I do to fix it?

If you are just visiting the site, just wait a bit and it should be back soon. We apologize for the inconvenience.

If you own the web site, please verify with your hosting company if your server is up and running and if they have our firewall IPs whitelisted. Please wait a few minutes and try again. If the problem persists, open a ticket on our support page https://support.sucuri.net and we will assist with troubleshooting.

What's the current use for surfbirds?
I used it look into (and update my own) rankings, the photo gallery of global rarities and the odd trip report.
It was convenient to have a website combining all of those but it wasn't the best for any of those, so with e.g. ranking on igoterra, photo galleries on socials and trip reports on cloudbirders I feel it has largely become obsolete for what I used it for.

We are happy tp provide space for any of the above if someone wants to coordinate it and moderate it.

Thinking about it, birdforum could be a good place for rankings and photo galleries (the latter obviously already in place): I see cloudbirders as a very solid and not to be replaced place for trip reports, and while any site can host reports and cloudbirders will link them to those sites, it's much more convenient to have them hosted by cloudbirders as it won't go down for a few decades to come (knowing the founders a bit).

Imho, birdforum can host a ranking that should be pretty self-moderated and shouldn't involve too much work, and while I like to visit the photo gallery from time to time, it's a bit too generic and could be better with specific subcategories or search functions. These days, ebird is flooded with good pictures and is thus my number one site to go in order to check bird pictures (mostly of pretty obscure species).

Besides those features I mentioned, birdforum can still be a good place to gather location info about classic birding sites (that aren't changing rapidly or where bird composition is dependent on latest info and/or seasonal effects), as seen in the birdforum opus section. Then again, there are other sites (orniverse and birdingplaces) doing that as well, and maybe better.

The question and challenge is to make sure everyone's on board / it's the go-to place for the critical mass of birders for any features, if not, this info is once again fragmented.

It appears that Surfbirds seems to be in the process of being re-designed. I am now getting a different set of pages there, some of which are not (yet?) working

The website is till down and appears to be dead and buried. All the observer listsings gone. Worse, all the trip reports gone that some of us put alot of working into pulling together. A salient lesson on how transient the Internet is.

Try to check the internet archive or similar sites to see if they have saved versions of the site, You may be able to pull off your own trip report and thereafter place it in one of the other sites having trip reports.
