I read that birds love dried Sunflower heads. I have lots of Sunflowers growing in my garden and they are just about dying off now.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do next? How do I go about drying them off, and then do I just hang the heads in the garden?

Thanks in advance.

Martin

I'm not sure what sort of weather you have in Scarborough. If it's hot and rains less than once a week like we have in Lexington, KY, you'll be fine just leaving them out there! If you have cooler weather or it is humid and rains a lot, just bring them in and hang them upside down in a cool dry place, like a pantry, and let them dry out.

Birds do love them! I left my sunflower heads on the stalks and it was an instant hit with goldfinches (American) It was cute to see them hang upside down on the lowered flower heads to get at the seeds. :)

I saw Martha Stewart do this, she simply hung the dried heads with twine, from branches. Don't recall how she dried them, but if you have a pilot light on the stove, that's easy. Or just find a dry spot near the furnace, etc.

I've just hut them and leave them in my garage to dry out then hang the up on trees. for the birds to hang on the sunflower and eat the seeds.

Hi Martin,

You can either leave them on the plant for the birds to take, or cut them of and hang them up to dry, but I would put them in a paper bag first, or you'll get sunflower seeds everywhere. It's up to you which way you prefer. I don't think the birds will mind as they'll get the seeds either way.

Good luck
