Suffolk Birding (3 Viewers)

In 1989 I saw a roost of 57 Turtle Doves at Lound nr Lowestoft Suffolk in June. So In the days of good numbers of Turtle Doves they seemed to flock throughout the summer too

Thrashed between Pontins Pakefield and Kensington Gardens south of Lowestoft.
Five Med Gulls including one on the Boating Lake at K Gardens. I had hoped to see the Yellow-browed Warbler found yesterday but the council were cutting down the Tamarisks where the bird was found! Otherwise dead as Westerlies normally provide.

Oulton Broad today. Loads of 1st, 2nd and ad win Laridae. Really grilled the area for Ring necked Ducks. Typically nothing. So far very poor for wintering Wildfowl. The American Wood Duck is now in full Drake Plumage. The much quieter Leathe's Ham produced some fine Wigeon and more variously aged Laridae.

Walked the Linear Park for the Sibe Chiffchaff, saw it and a couple of normal birds.
One of those days when it was too warm for a thick coat but too cold without it.

I walked to Ness Point at Lowestoft this afternoon and spent half an hour watching three Purple Sandpipers and ten immaculate Turnstones on the rocks in front of Birds Eye. It's the closest view I have had of Purple Sands and they are great looking birds. Unfortunately I hadn't taken my camera as there was talk of rain later. I was kicking myself as it was dry all afternoon. No signs of anything interesting in the Tamarisk bushes though, or anywhere else, come to that.

Premium days birding at Lackford - Jack Snipe is back in its favored location.

Nuthatch; was the first I've seen on the reserve and the first reported in a good while I believe.

Also on site Goldeneye, Wigeon, Siskin and Goldcrest. Then in fields just opposite the entrance from the main road a huge flock of Golden Plover, with Lapwings, Red-Legged Partridge and a couple of Egyptian Geese!

There is also a Merlin reported this week.

I LOVES THE LACKFORD LAKES!

lapwings noted flying south this morning at dawn in Lowestoft also found a couple of Waxwings near Bloodmoor Lane Lowestoft

Dawn raid on Lackford this morning - was insanely cold!

Tempreture aside, the whole sailing lake was covered in Gulls - couldnt belive it! Mostly Black-Heads, but also Lesser Black-Backed and a couple Greater Black-Backed for good measure! Was proper spectacle - could here the gulls from Lackford village - whole sky was full of Gulls! Although I didnt pick out anything different - defo be worth checkin over winter...

Gulls aside more Goldeneye than last week plus 3 Pintail and few Snipe knocking about... no sign of last weeks Jack tho.

Off to coast 2moz - hopefully be sum goodies about!:t:;)

SWEET!

I always thought Woodcock be about - never seen one yet tho. Was there much else about later on?

Was Merlin reported last week... but aint heard owt since.

Other than the Woodcock V quiet, Some discussion on a BOP that sat outside the Centre before i got there seems it was a possible a merlin but not definite depends who you spoke to

Ah rite, encouraging it could still be about - would love to see Merlin locally, not seen em in time.

Was also pics of Whoopers that dropped in posted by the sighting board - all sorts passes thru & I am timing me self perfectly to miss it!:D

Cheers.

Evening all.
Anyone got any info on the GG Shrike at Lakenheath. RBA have it today "Still in village carpark", so a little unclear. Reserve carpark on some carpark in lakenheath itself?
Cheers,
Jim.

Great grey shrike present at Lakenheath Fen 17 November. Then turned up again 23 November, it is still present at 2.00pm today. In poplars around the reserve carpark or often along bushes along the riverbank.

Great thanks Steve, will drop in tomorrow as I have to drive to East Dereham from Cambridge. Fingers crossed it will still be there!

Hi does anyone know if the starlings are putting on a roosting show this year at Lackford lakes? When I was there in September someone mentioned it as being a very good place to see them in November/ December? Im hoping to pass by on Monday afternoon.
Thanks
Tina

Better Numbers Sunday - but they wasn't really 'swarming' coming in groups of a hundred or so & dropping in.

Still impressive tho :t:
