Stockholm - any suggestions? (1 Viewer)

Could any birder familiar with the Stockholm city area recommend a couple of places to go for a visitor who won't be driving?

Ideally, a woodland/forest area and a place for ducks/waders would be great....much appreciated in advance!

Hello,

I would recommend these four areas:

Tyresta National Park
A National Park with relatively large areas of woodland, ca 45 min drive south of the city

Ågestasjön
A lake with some woodland to the west ca 20 min south of the city

Järvafältet
An area with both lakes (Säbysjön) and woodland areas ca 15 min northwest of the city

Angarnsjöängen
A lake with some good woodland north-west of the lake

If I were you I would probably spend one day in Tyresta and the other in Ågesta or Angarn.

I have not found any good web pages in English describing the places but on this one you can at least find directions to some of them:

Then there are some Swedish webpages. Unless you speak swedish they will be of limited use, but at least you can find maps, some images etc.

...check out my blog, Stockholm area blog over the last couple of years, all areas reached by public transport. Sandemar, Angarn, Agesta, tyresta N P all superb. Also the islands on the archilelago. Sandhamn, Utö and Landsort are all great.

Also dalily sightings here. Uppland and Sodermalm land are the provincial areas around Stockholm. English icon in the corner will translate site for you. Huge achives there too to research on. hope this helps.

Hello everybody,
I'll bump up this request, with a few differences: I'll be in Stockholm late December/early January and I'd like to visit the archipelago: any suggestion?
Do I need a car to visit the inland nature reserves? Which is better for a one-day trip? What weather conditions should I expect in that period? I know light will be dim and daylight short ...

Hello,

You can get to all of the places mentioned above by public transportation. However, it is of course a bit quicker with a car. In the archipelago I would recommend Landsort and to get there you take a train then bus and then boat (ca 2 hrs one way in total). Sandhamn is roughly the same time from stockholm and one difference is that it is more busy with hotel/spa, restaurants etc.

Both islands are excellent suggestions, good winter sites. Duck, White Tailed Eagles and redpolls, Crossbills and maybe a bonus bird such as Pine Grosbeak...

Weather will be most likely snow and arund minus ten to fifteen degrees, though not windy, so if you wrap up you should be fine. good warm clothes and boots are a must though.

Hjällstaviken is another good inland winter site. Best to play it by ear and see what is around at the time. Often birds can stay in the same area in January. Also depends on whether certain species have erupted south, ie,Owls, Pine Grosbeak etc.
Angarn often a good bet. Sandemar has White tailed Eagle in January, though can be rather devoid of birds at times. Smew will be present.
With regard to duck a hard freeze will mean ice over all inland sites and birds moving to open water on the achipelaga. Stocckholm Strom in the city centre can then hold a lot of birds as it always has open water....

Can anyone tell me what birds are being seen in central stockholm parks right now as the wife and I are visiting next weekend? Thanks. it's supposed to be a romantic weekend, but a pine grosbeak or a flock of waxwings would make it better for me! (don't tell her)

...not a lot at present about, though Three-toed Pecker still at Hansta, Norra Järvafältet, twenty minutes on the train followed by a twenty minute walk to get you on site, can take some time to get this though as it is in a largish block of woodland...
Waxwings are in the area there too, had a flock there a week ago of 20 odd birds, Great Grey Shrike not to far away at 30M Kärret. 4 Twite present too...
