Spiny Hooktip (Watsonalla uncinula) (1 Viewer)

Paul Chapman

Well-known member
Spiny Hooktip was recorded as new to Britain on 7th October 2023 in Gloucestershire. That autumn, I had two gendetted examples on 18th October 2023 from my garden in Clevedon & there were other gendetted examples from Bristol, Weston-super-mare & Cardiff. During this year, I am aware of other gendetted examples from Wiltshire, Cardiff, Gloucestershire & Weston-super-mare. But Bristol appears to be the epicentre & there are convincing photographs going back a couple of years.

The moth had moved north & colonised the Channel Islands but oddly, I am unaware of records on the south coast. This may be that they are still being overlooked as people do not realise the variability of Spiny Hooktip assuming all are darker & purple & all have a white flash in the wing tip. I think that is wrong. I also think that Spiny can wear quite quickly to have pretty restricted black in the wing tip. In such circumstances, the angle of the outermost black mark is key as well as the separation in the black marks in my view.

My identifications tend to be based on more restricted black in the wing tip with normally two separated black marks with a sharper angle in comparison to a shallower angle & blurred dark area in Oak Hooktip as well as occasionally darker or more purplish colouration, slightly larger size & darker crossband with straighter edges.

The issue is really whether Oak can wear to look like those wingtip markings? My assumptions need to be tested by a few dissected examples.

Mark Lawlor's analysis from the Channel Islands is attached as well as my current assumptions. I will update this in due course including if my assumed Spiny Hooktips prove to be Oak Hooktip after all.... :)

All the best

Paul

Thanks, Paul.

Our mothing group traps regularly on the South Hampshire coast and I was totally unaware of this species. We ran 6 traps last Friday night with at least 1 Oak Hook-Tip recorded, although I didn't examine it in any detail. We'll be checking carefully from now on. There is the expertise within the group to gen. det. if it's considered necessary and appropriate.

I have labelled up 6 Watsonalla Hooktips for delivery to our County Recorder for gendet this week. That will mean either confirmation or rewriting this thread! I think that the number of gendetted individuals now has escaped a lot of individuals who do not realise that it is around ten minimum around North Somerset/Gloucestershire/South Wales. They also do not realise how obscurely marked some of those are.

I am getting various good & experienced moth trappers on X/Twitter simply responding to my posts with comments that they are Oak Hooktips without elaboration which to be honest is beginning to right royally fluff me off. :)

All the best

That is the most unhelpful comment you can get. There is a respected moth-er here in Aus who does this all the time. He has got used to my grumpy often one word response along the lines of "why" and is now getting better at giving a rationale to his response but still does just say its species xx without explanation! Very frustrating!

Over the years Paul, I’ve found a “negative” response to non imaged or non third partied support for any records of anything, that is less than of regular occurrence, irrespective of one’s experience.
Indeed to the point now, where I and others, don’t bother circulating records, unless of course there’s a good back up image, which in your case there is…oh to confound!…
“sour grapes-sour grapes” do I hear?👍

I think that this is just about knowledge & experience. Spiny Hooktip is not in the mainstream literature & is generally rather pigeon-holed in descriptions. So in circumstances where gendetting has clarified that it is in fact a resident British species locally, it is about opening our eyes to identifying Oak & Spiny Hooktip afresh in order to clarify features. We will see...

I particularly enjoy the - 'you can't identify' comments. This generally means - 'I can't identify'.

I should know about my records within the next week or so but have now pulled together the following first ten gendetted records of which I am aware & reviewed the photos:-

Stroud, Gloucestershire - 6th October 2023 (Seb Buckton)
Cardiff, Glamorgan - 18th October 2023 (George Tordoff)
Clevedon, North Somerset - 18th October 2023 (Paul Chapman)
Clevedon, North Somerset - 18th October 2023 (Paul Chapman)
Weston-super-mare, North Somerset - 19th October 2023 (David Gibbs)
Bristol, Avon - 28th October 2023 (Peter Mansfield)
Bristol, Avon - 30th October 2023 (Peter Mansfield)

Weston-super-mare, North Somerset - 2nd August 2024 (David Aggasiz)
Cardiff, Glamorgan - 5th August 2024 (David Gilmore)
Bristol, Avon - 13th August 2024 (Jean Oliver)

I know of dozens of other records locally that are pretty convincing but not confirmed by dissection.

Photos of the first six gendetted records are in the attached word document. The photos are by the individuals named above.

Still waiting for results on my moths but if identifying Spiny Hooktip on the basis of morphological features is confirmed, I am aware now of photos dating back to 2020 & records from the following Counties:-

North Somerset - gendetted
Avon - gendetted
Gloucesterhire - gendetted
Glamorgan - gendetted
Warwickshire - gendetted

Oxfordshire - photographed
Wiltshire - photographed
Buckinghamshire - photographed
Berkshire - photographed

Still nothing from the south which is really headscratching.

The presumed female from my garden on Monday night has laid 30 eggs on Holm Oak overnight when given a choice of different Oak leaves.

The presumed female Spiny Hooktip is still laying periodically on Holm Oak with 87 eggs of which 65 of the older ones are now darkening up so reinforcing the view that they are fertile.

Nothing hatched as yet but I have found a Spiny Hooktip photo from my garden from 13th September 2022 pre-dating the first current official record by over two years. (But I am aware of other apparent photos back to 2020.)

That pic attached with one of the recent gendetted ones.
