So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body? (2 Viewers)

Nice photos Mike, all nice and sharp.

Just in the process of installing firmware 1.5.0, my R5 is showing as having been updated up to 1.2.0.

I can’t seem to find the interim updates on the Canon website. Does this mean 1.5.0. will incorporate these with me not having to do anything else? Anyone know?

Thanks in advance.
Hi Mark. If you install 1.5.0 all the missing ones will be incorporated in the firmware update.

I've yet to load up the latest firmware to the R5. Has anyone experienced issues with 1.5?
I had initially a couple of lockups after updating - something that I hadn't experiences since firmware 1.2. Then, after using my rf100-500 zoom for the first time last week, I had some issues after using it for a few hours, where it locked up and then started to focus erratically. I saved my settings to the memory card and did a reset of the camera. After reloading the settings, everything has been fine. Here is a photo taken with this set up at a distance of about 5m from a hide. (Hide de Majoleto, Wild Andalucia, Ronda)brt1001.jpg

I updated my R5 which I use with the the RF100-500 and 1.4 tc. Last week, it froze two or three times; once with an error message suggesting switching off and on or reinstalling the battery. This I did and all was well. I was using the Canon battery at that time. When it ran out, I replaced it with a Neewer knock-off, and have had no problems since. Coincidence or cause and effect?

That's a cracking image Kevin.
I've read a few complaints from peeps on various sites about issues with firmware 1.5, many resolved by a reset and some are not. I've decided to hold fire for now. Interestingly Canon rumours have posted a link to enable a firmware downgrade.
Cheers.

My R5 has locked up several times since the firmware upgrade. Switching it off and back on solves the problem but it might cost you "the" shot too.

Mine has developed a 'new' kind of lock up. I only suffered a lock up 4 times in a year with the camera, the first time being when the camera was about 6 months old in June, when I was getting my best views of the Northern Mocking Bird in Northumberland. Had to fix it by removing and replacing the battery. The bird flew off into cover while I was doing it.

This new lock-up has happened several times since I updated to Firmware 1.5. Rather than the Camera freezing up with an image diplayed frozen in the viewfinder as has happened in the past, what I now get, usually in the middle of activity, but not necessarily in a burst, is the viewfinder going black. No need to take out the battery. It clears itself with a half press of the shutter button to reawaken the camera.

Yes, mine just goes black. Didn't think to try the shutter button. Thanks!

Full frame and uncropped (but reduced size for my facebook page) from Wednesday and this afternoon.

RF100-500 lens. I had the 1.4x with me, but it stayed in my pocket.

Lovely Purple Sands, even showing the purple!! Here's some Ring-billed Gulls from Strathclyde Loch last weekend. No converter, just R5 and RF 100-500

Opportunist shots. While I was photographing the purple sandpipers yesterday I heard a commotion behind me to my right.

An oystercatcher had prized a limpet off the rocks and a common gull was fancying a free meal.

Consecutive frames, 1 & 2 of a burst of 4. 1st Curtain shutter. RF100-500.

Like one or two of the others, Mike, my R5 has ‘locked up’ just once since the download. I simply turned my camera off and then back on again. That did the trick and it hasn’t happened since.

Meanwhile, a few photos of Purple Sandpipers taken recently at Rhôs-on Sea. R5 with 100-500, no extender but I had it in crop mode. All three photos were cropped a fair bit as well, probably a bit too much if I’m honest.

A few more of the Pacific Diver in South Wales. Same set up in crop mode again although, as the bird was very obliging, the photos were only cropped marginally.

Still experimenting with the settings and, in particular, whether to stay in full frame mode and crop relatively heavily or put the camera in crop mode and crop again marginally afterwards, losing MPs. Once again, these photos are as in the last two posts, ie in crop mode and without extender. Red-flanked Bluetail by the upper River Tees.

I think I'll try the upload Mark, I don't need to depend on having the R5 until the end of March so I'd have time to address anything untoward. From reading about other peoples bad experiences it seems possible that problems may become more severe depending on the amount of customisation applied to the camera. At the end of the day I could always downgrade back to 1.4.
Nice images, I'm very familiar with the Purps at that location. I'm not a fan of the crop mode and have yet to see any benefit other than smaller file sizes (talk of better af is anecdotal and was not backed up by science when I sent a TQ to Canons technical dept). Personally I'd have used the 1.4x in non crop mode for such a small static subject and let the ISO ride a bit. You could always take some of each and evaluate the results.
Cheers

Something approaching spring weather yesterday.

Dear Members and birdwatchers!

This might be a stupid question. But is it possible to use the new RF lenses with the old D5 cameras.

After reading here I have decided to buy a R camera with an converter ring for my old lenses.

I have 2 Canon 5D as I always bring an extra camera. Paying a lot for travel so I need to have an extra camera just in case the worst happens.

But now I see the excellent pictures here and that Canon have a 100 - 500mm lens for the mirror less camera. So my plan is to buy the 100-500 and to sell one 5D and my 100-400mm lens. Anyone having experience of using the 100-500mm with the old 5D?

Kind regards and happy birding
Aladdin
