So how is your 2007 list going? (1 Viewer)

It was quite foggy (with a little light rain) this morning as I birded Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge, Mound City, Missouri. Arriving at about 8:30 AM I was greeted by the sound of two Sandhill Cranes calling to one another somewhere out in the marsh. I was not able to see them, but it is always a joy just hearing them call. I tallied twenty (20) species of waterfowl (swans, geese and ducks) on the 10 mile drive around the refuge. On the mud flat areas I was able to gain three (3) new year birds for Missouri.

121. American Golden-Plover (x5)
122. American Pipit (x2)
123. Lesser Yellowlegs (x2)

* I also saw two (2) Greater Yellowlegs and forty (40) Wilson's Snipe, but I had seen both of these species earlier in March.

I got up to the Susquehanna River near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania this morning:

143. Sora (Lifer)
144. Long-tailed Duck (Lifer)

picked up several smashing birds today. first off a treecreeper at home (119) followed by a trip to Ellesmere in search of the little gull that had turned up (not at all common in shropshire + a lifer for me) got it very quickly (120) then i got a call to tell me that a jack snipe was out in the open at a reserve only a few miles away, picked it up straight away, plus a second lifer for the day (121). plus a host of shropshire year ticks including, common gull, goldeneye, common snipe, pink footed goose & shelduck

An early morning day out in my backyard

2. Blue Jay x3
3. House Sparrow
4. Northern Cardinal
5. Tree Swallow x2

I too went in search of a Little Gull this morning, but I missed out. I also dipped on an Eared Grebe that had been seen the day before.

Our Ducks are arriving now in good numbers as well as some of the other birds so my ABA year list is climbing:
#87 Ferruginous Hawk
#88 Ring-necked Duck
#89 American Coot
#90 Northern Shoveler
#91 Canvasback
#92 Western Meadowlark

Well, after a pretty good January and February I slowed to a dismal halt in March due to working six days a week and, three weeks ago, having my binoculars irreparably broken |=(|
Finally got the cash together by juggling the housekeeping (and staying OUT of our local second-hand book store which is like a second home to me!) and bought myself a new pair of bins this weekend so, at last, I can get back outdoors where I belong :bounce:

It was a long time coming *WHERE were these darned birds hiding?* but I finally, last night at dusk out of my living room window, caught up with.....

93: Song Thrush :t:

97. Black Vulture

...I really want to break 100 before I leave for Texas on Tuesday... targets are... Double-crested Cormorant, Long-tailed Duck, Fox Sparrow, Tree Swallow, American Oystercatcher, Pectoral Sandpiper?, Wilson's Snipe, Blue-winged Teal?, Great Egret, Osprey, Glossy Ibis?, Cackling Goose? (reported), Piping Plover?, Eastern Meadowlark?

Of course, that "work" thing gets in the way... wish me luck, crew!
