We thought it was a Red Spider Mite, but this beastie was about 4mm long! Any ideas please?

Not red spider mite but a velvet mite such as Eutrombidium rostratus - this is a predatory species not a phytophagous pest so look after it! There are lots of differences between this and 'spider mites' but mainly this is broadest towards the front whereas the 'spider mites are broader to the back ....

Many thanks to David, Sue and Paul. Mrs Checkmate's pleased it didn't turn out to be a giant spider mite! Velvet mite didn't turn up when I was searching, and now I see it its about the right size.

Thanks a lot for that information Paul, it's good to know what it really is and whether it's a good or bad pest. Your info was very interesting.

Thanks again.

Sue.
