Small bird red breast UK (1 Viewer)

Got a phone call tonight from me mam, she has had a small fine billed bird in her garden for the last week. It's about wren sized, brown back but a red breast. An escape is possible but being aware of the presence of Yanks in the country, something special isn't an impossibility. Any suggestions 'cause I can't think of anything.

nb the last time I ignore her id request (black and white bird) it turned out to be a ring ouzel overwintering in a neighbours garden. Never saw it!

No, she's better than that! She would id most common British garden birds easily, it's wren sized, tail not cocked, red breast, fine bill, looks like a warbler. As I say could easily be an escapee but I'd like an idea of what that could be.

first thought was nuthatch but it sounds like she's too good to not have picked a nuthatch out.

Might be a linnet! I know it'sa little bigger but I know lots of peole who think they are smaller!

No, she knows linnets. Thought immediately of RBF but says its smaller than a robin and very sleak, got me baffled. Will have to take collins up tomorrow!

If I were you i would get her to take a photo of it so it can be identified easier and maybe it could be something more interesting ;) I have to admit it does sound reminisent of Siberian Rubythroat ...

It doesn't sound reminiscent of a Siberian Rubythroat to me. The white and black on the face are almost as striking as the red throat. Any description would be more likely to mention those than a thin bill or a brown back.

Stephen.
