Skylark singing (1 Viewer)

This morning we had the worst snow of this winter, but while walking from the car park into work I heard a skylark singing.

It is a sound which I associate so much with summer it didn't seem right to hear it with all the snow around. Is it normal for skylarks to sing in winter, and I have just not noticed them before?

I saw a skylark rise up in the air singing on Monday, my first since last summer. The local countryside ranger also mentioned in todays local paper that she heard her first one of the year last week.
Maybe they go on daylight hours, rather than the weather when assessing the time of year, I dont know, but I'm sure you'll get an answer from someone.
To me its a great sign SPRING IS BEGINNING

I saw and heard them 3 weeks ago when i was at home.

I hope it is the first signs oh spring.

Its truely wild out here just now, Strong winds and snow . SPRING!!!!!!

I saw and heard a Skylark singing about 3 weeks ago too, it's such a gorgeous sound and really reminds you that spring is coming.

Skylarks sometimes sing a bit all through the winter - heard them in November last year. But rarely as vigorously or as long as in spring, I guess, and maybe less often in song flight.

Ive often heard Skylarks singing in the winter. In the last 2-3 weeks on my local patch they have been singing and doing display flight. Looks like they think its Spring already..

I'll go with the general "two or three weeks" comments also. It's great to hear them on my patch and (along with Yellowhammers) is my "spring is a-coming" sound.

Thanks for the replies. I'm just waiting now for the weather to come round the idea it might be spring!
I have seen my first Snowdrops last week in Northumberland so I guess Spring has come early this year. You wouldn't think so tho with all this snow...

Yes, lots of Skylarks singing and displaying in a cold and windy SE Northumberland yesterday. They seemed very approachable as well!

The Beautiful Skylark

He rises and begins to round,
He drops the silver chain of sound,
Of many links without a break,
In chirrup, whistle, slur and shake.

For singing till his heaven fills,
`tis love of earth that he instills,
And ever winging up and up,
Our valley is his golden cup,
And he the wine which overflows
To lift us with him when he goes.

Till lost on his aerial rings
in light, and then the fancy sings.

I'm surprised to read that you have just seen snowdrops here last week, I saw lots of them in January!! We also have a few daffodils out in the garden for over a week now, not sure if its a bit early for them???

I saw a small group of maybe 5 birds on the 27th of Feb over farmland in the Rainford area. Wasn't sure what they were at first (small brown job view) but kept an eye whrer they had gone down. Every so often one would rise and sing its head off. As we passed we were underneath one and there was another about 200 yards away also singing.
Lovely siight and sound. Heard one yesterday as well at Delamare in Cheshire.

There were a couple of Skylarks singing from on high over Morfa Madryn, Llanfairfechan when I was there on the 27/2/05. It was a lovely sound but I must admit that it didn't feel right when the temperature was only just above zero. It reminded me of hot summers over the moors around the Goyt Valley as a lad.

Snowdrops been out a few weeks, and skylarks singing for a few weeks to, and it was bitterly cold and strong winds. Ohh what a lovely song.

there's an autumn flowering Snowdrop just to confuse garden visitors ;)

and a spring flowering version of the autumn flowering Snowdrop :h?:

heard Skylark singing in fields behind my garden today.
