Scientific names (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone,
I´m currently working on a project, in which I want to translate all the scientific names of all birds of the world.
But sometimes I got stuck.
Do you know Grus vipio?
What does this word vipio mean?

I have another question. What does Sarothrura mean?

Well, we know they are birds of the "rail" family - and saro sounds and looks similar to "Sora". Thrura might be similar to the meaning of "thrush" or "thrasher". A Latin dictionary might be helpful.

SAROTHRURA - saron = greek for a broom; oura = tail - reference to the fluffy tail of this group. I recommend you get hold of James Jobling's 'A dictionary of Scientific Bird Names' (Oxford University Press 1991 - ISBN 0-19-854634-3) from whence the details came. I think it may be out of print though,

It is, John, as I have tried to obtain a copy recently.I do, however, have my sister's copy in my possession.

Naturistbird.

Sisters can be useful .... I still have my sister's copy of the 'Observers Book of Birds' (c1955) which got me into birding! More relevantly, I have occasionally seen Jobling's book second hand, but it is scarce ... presumably because those who've got it, other than your sister, are hanging on to it!
