Saving word documents as PDF files (1 Viewer)

Can anyone tell me how to save a word document as a PDF file.

On my friends Mac there is an option on the print menu to save as a pdf file but I can't find anything similar on my PC.

Any help appreciated...

Rob

Hi rob

You need to gave Adobe Acrobat installed on your pc. You have to pay for it unlike adobe reader.

Try googling 'pdf files' you should get plenty of programmes coming up that will be cheaper than Adobe Acrobat. I'm sure that computeractive magazine used to recommend a free programme on their website.

More than one way to skin that cat...

There's a free PDF generator called PDFCreator (Google it) which installs as a printer driver - works perfectly.

Or both Ability Office (commercial, but very good and inexpensive) and OpenOffice (Open source/free) have a "save as PDF" option.

You could always download a trial copy of Ability Write, open the Word doc in it and then save as PDF from there.

.. of course if you were running on OSX then you'd be able to create a PDF of anything that you can print using the OS's built in PDF generation capability.

On the PeeCee I'd recommend Docuprinter, available from Neevia.com, which does the job for me at work and is generally pretty reliable, with most of the switches you're likely to need.

Hope this helps

I use Pdf995 (freeware, but it's worth paying to get rid of the nag screen).

Download here: http://www.pdf995.com/download.html

You need the printer driver and free converter.

The sister programme PdfEdit995 is also well worth having. It can combine pdfs, extract pages from them, convert them to jpgs and other things.

A brilliant suite.

Try PaperlessPrinter

You can use Paperless Printer to convert to PDF, HTML, Excel , JPEG or BMP, preserving the exact look and content of the original document with fonts and graphics. Anytime you want to convert your document, go to the print menu and choose PaperlessPrinter as the printer. Couldnt be simpler. Plus its free for non-commercial use.

For conversion to just PDF, CutePDF [freeware] is also recommended.

Hope that helps.

Just a word of warning! I downloaded Paperless Printer and installed it on my Windows 2000 machine. To my horror when I went to print I suddenly had NO printers - they'd all disappeared. A quick system restart and they were back but no sign of Paperless printer. I can only surmise that there may be some conflict with Docuprint which was already installed. Anyway Paperless Printer has now been deleted from my system.

Thats quite odd. I have installed and used Paperless Printer on my desktop and laptop [XP] without any problem except a nag screen which has to be cancelled at the end of the pdf creation process.
Anyway, thanks for the info.
