Safe product for birds that will remove algae from waterfall (1 Viewer)

My dilemma...our backyard waterfall has algae. I sort is like it. Makes me think it has been there for a long time. However my husband didn't mind it on the large rocks be hates it in the actual smaller rock bed of the falls.

Birds and critters come and drink and bathe from it. I need something that won't harm them.

Any suggestions?

But I honestly don't mind it myself...again I think once we have it more planted up around the waterfall it may blend in more. Making it look more natural and established.

But my husband wanted me to ask...about a possible solution...to our algae that would not harm our birds and animals that use it.

I came across this...may need to join a garden forum to see if anyone has used this product.

D-Solv9 algae control
$19.95
Double the strength of AlgaeFix at 9% active solution. This 16 oz. bottle treats 9600 gallons of water. D-Solv9 will remove string algae from your waterfall in just a couple of treatments. Also effective against green water. Very economical to use. Safe for goldfish, koi and golden orfe as well as pets and birds.

Seeing people also turn off falls and clean most out with toilet brush then poors peroxide on the remaining. And it melts/kills the remaining algae. This is not to hurt fish...so safe for birds?

I asked to see their response.

Any chemicals that upset your algae will effect other wild life if its fast flowing I suggest you give it a blast with a high pressure hose every now and again and wash it off. Why are there no plants/flowers growing adjacent Then again I am old world and no nothing;)

The forum I went to says to treat string algae (which is what we have) to treat with peroxide...it doesn't hurt the fish in ponds. Saying peroxide is made up of mostly water...I looked up our peroxide content. Inactive ingredient is purified water...Active ingredient is 3%hydrogen peroxide.

They said if one doesn't remove some of the algae before treating it puts high oxygen into the water.

No longer an issue. My husband had a friend stop down who also liked the algae. So we decided to use a new toilet brush to remove some of the algae off the rocks in the rock bed of the waterfall. Leaving some of it behind and not treating it period. So delemia solved.

A good solution.

If you were to remove it with chemical agents (ALL of which are harmful to fish etc despite what the packaging may say) then it would return in a matter of months. Whatever develops naturally will eventually settle into an equilibrium, which will vary during the seasons, and require very little treatment. If your husband really wants to remove it in the future the best chemical is elbow grease, available free at many outlets.

;)
