It went live on BirdTrack www.birdtrack.net a couple of weeks ago (at rspb's say-so). It is meant to be displayed with the strapline at all times, so for completeness...

The costs for logos aren't usually just for the logos but also for their whole marketing/brand strategy. Not trying to defend the cost of them, but there is usually more to them than just a simple logo.

There will also be the cost of replacing staff uniforms, logos on vehicles, replacing signs, etc all to include the new logo!

I was part of a group of BTO members surveyed about the logo/branding, on the conference call of 6 peeps I was the only one who knew it was a Gannet (not a 'sea'gull!) and none of them saw the waves as lines on a graph. The new BTO logo is a bit pants IMHO!

In the world of social media and texting, the rspb maybe thought the upper case text was a bit SHOUTY!

Would anyone actually notice the difference if it wasnt pointed out to them. What a sheer waste of money.....Just makes me wonder how much they payed the person to do the re-branding.

I like the new "strapline" if that's the right term for it.

Something struck me about their website homepage.. out of 10 pictures: 1 was a shop, 6 were animals other than birds, only 3 pictures were of birds!

Re-branding is so much more than just a logo. Its the whole way to thinking for the charity. I actually work for them but before anyone asks, I've got no idea how much every cost but I think it will be worthwhile. Loads of people don't really know what the charity does, some think it rescues injured birds, some think its a bird club and most people think its purely about birds. It's a conservation charity that basically protects nature, so if every it does and says clearly explains that then it will get somewhere. Ultimately, it needs the support of the public to do what it does so spending money on making the public more aware of what it does is surely a good thing providing the return is more people joining or donating.

It's also a membership organisation (a society) and it should listen to its members. I asked if it would ever consider switching to an optional electronic delivery for the Birds magazine because that's the way I prefer it and it would save on paper and postal charges, only to be given a straight "no". I might just be one member, but have they ever considered asking the membership?

The magazine is already available in electronic form during its production, so it would be easy to set-up an online delivery system. Or silly me, does that mean they'd not be able to send out all the bumpf that comes with it?

The reason for the brand change was to avoid becoming stationary;). In order to meet the conservation challenge, the RSPB needs to grow and to do that it needs to be relevant to more people.

Stationery, signage, uniforms etc will be replaced on a phased basis when the opportunity arises.

Apologies for the pedantry.

Rob

And that doesn't include the cost of the change of stationary etc.Ex member.Eddy

Well it's better than the BTO logo.

Stephen

Stephen, don't you mean bto ;)?

I just looked up the old one... What a disgraceful waste of money. Even if it cost a tenner. People at the very top must have signed off on this. Entire cultures of organisations flow from the top down so to me it just shows the people running the show are completely and utterly detached from their fee paying membership.

If these people feel that the new logo enables them to get their message across more effectively then IMO a. they are the wrong people to be getting that message across, and b. they are treating the membership/potential membership like complete and utter idiots.

I really just can't bring myself to believe that, at the grand revealing of the 'new' logo, there weren't a few heads being scratched... Is that really it? Is it April 1st? That can't be Peter Kay in disguise can it?

I've had a go at playing 'Spot the Difference', but can only make out 3: The black outlines on the Avocet have been dropped, the black border from the logo has gone and the font changes to lower case.

I read that there was even consideration at a name change. If they want to attract more people from a non-bird angle, why not set up a sister charity?
