Hello everyone!

I live in Greensboro, North Carolina, and there's been a male rose breasted grosbeak at my backyard feeder for the past three days. This is the first time I've seen one in my backyard!

Dang, another who has the Red-breasted Grosbeak. Aren't they beautiful. Apparently, according to the Carolina listserv they are here in good numbers but I haven't seen a one yet this season. Nice shot of this gorgeous male.

Me too!! This is also a first for me! The male is quite shy, but the female is at the feeders a good part of the day! They've been here for about a week now! Could they possibly be sticking around??? HUH? I'm in southern Ohio. Anyone know?

This morning 5/7/07 in Western Ohio (Ada) I spotted two male Rose Breasted Grosbeaks. I'm a beginning birder and noticed a call I had never heard. Upon looking up in a tree I noticed the striking red breast patch and the strikingly contrasting black head and wings. Quite an exciting spot in my opinion.

I think mine are here to stay

Three males and perhaps 2 females have been coming to our feeders regularly. I read in our Sunday paper that they have extended further south into our area. Here's a pic, but it's not too great cuz I had to take it thru a screen.

In the last three days I've gotten Evening grosbeaks and rose breasted grosbeaks nearly at the same time.Gotta love a big beak! STOWE VERMONT5/8/07

I have one pair for the last few days. I went to Publix and bought $35.00 worth of fruit for them just so they might hang around. Then headed off to the bird store and bought every nut and berry seed and cake they had. So far so good. Also have a scarlet tanager (male) to go with it. I`m in Cumming Ga at the river. Anyone in the area is welcome to stop in Tue--Sun 10am to 5pm. You can see the farm here www.rainbowranchtrout.com We also have a pile of red-headed woodpeckers this year.

K C, We had about 85 kids and parent types in to do some fishing and a picnik. As I was hauling off the trash I put all the grapes, oj, apples, cookies, rasins, bread, chettos, etc etc on my 4 foot X 4 foot bird feeder and it was the next day I got all the new cool birds.

I saw a scarlet tanager briefly last week. We do have them here in the summer, but you have to be on your toes to get a glimpse of them. They're always so high up in our hickory trees. I've never had one at a feeder.

Hi JMom et al.,

It has been suggested on the Ohio-birds listserv that the reason for so many grosbeaks hitting feeders in the state is the cold spell in April, which caused a retarding of the flowering and leafing of many species of trees as well as a diminished number of insects.

You can get on the Ohio-birds mailing list by visiting the Ohio Ornithological Society's website: http://www.ohiobirds.org.
